If I were to accept the Army's Health scholarship (3 years) and went into neurosurg. with a Residency of 6-8 years would I have to do more than the three years I was supported for??? If so that's crap!!

Yes, you'd graduate residency owing however long the residency was (minus internship). So if neurosurg is 7 years total (1 yr internship plus 6 years residency), then you'd graduate residency owing 6 more years.

It makes sense if you want to hoodwink prospective neurosurgeons. Generally they're too smart for that, and it sounds as if you are too. With recruiters, it's good to ask questions. Get anything they promise you in writing, though.

Unfortuneatly this is an example of the recruiter telling the truth, but not the whole truth.

Your payback for the HPSP scholarhsip is indeed one for one. However, in reality, you _do_ pay back your commitment while in residency. Unfortunatly, you ALSO accrue a one-for-one payback commitment during residency.

So after 4 years of your neurosurg residency, you have completed paying back your HPSP obligation. You have also accrued a 4-year obligation for the residency, however, and if you continue it out to completion, you will have a seven year commitment - all from your residency, because you've already paid back your HPSP obligation.

Actually, I'm not completely sure about this, but I have been told that the internship year is no longer a freebie - you accrue a year commitment for it. Haven't seen it in writing though (and it doesn't much matter in my case 😉 )

It's possible, but I find it hard to believe that something as huge as that could have passed w/o a lot of noise surrounding it.

This is assuming he goes to Walter Reed for an active duty NS residency. If deferred, then no ADSC would be incurred for residency and he would only owe four years for HPSP.

True, but you're not allowed to ask for a deferrment as your #1 choice in the army; you have to rank the military residencies first.

I haven't seen anything to that regard. Regardless, it wouldn't affect anyone that has already taken the scholarship. The contracts we signed stipulated our payback. Now it is possible that it has been changed, in which case it would affect everyone who signed after that change.

does this also apply to dental residency under the hpsp scholarship? so if you had a 4 yr scholarship and did a 4 yr OMFS residency in the army/air force, would that mean you would be able to leave the military and enter the civilian world when you completed the residency? it sounds too good to be true though

No, that has never been the case. Residency never counts toward decreasing your commitment time, it can only increase it.

That would be good for me, but my PD (who in all fairness, might not be in a position to be sure) said that the internship year now "counts".
