Question about photos for secondaries

Is it acceptable to take a photo for yourself with a digital camera and print it out on regular paper with a color printer? Or is it a big deal to have it done professionally or get it done on photo paper? I ask because I don't have a car on campus at the moment so driving down to CVS/Walgreens to get it done isn't really an option unless I ask a friend.

I just used a digital camera, then cropped the photo. I would recommend that you use photo paper though.

I took the picture on my digital camera then uploaded and ordered prints from walmart.com and had them shipped to my apartment. It was only ~$3

Ditto the above. Don't print it on normal paper, but if you have a photo printer and a piece of photo paper, that'll be fine.

I took the picture, with my computer camera. Its actually kinda high resolution, so it came out pretty good. Just sit with a sort of neutral color background on the back, and put a self timer on it. Make sure you have decent lighting. Or if you have a tripod, then put the camera on it and do the same.
And by the way, printing on photo paper is a must, so do as Ditto said and order prints online.

Is it really terrible to just crop a photo you already have into a 2x2 picture? I always look really terrible/scary when I know I am purposely taking a picture for something (i.e. my passport photo looks like I just drank about a fifth of vodka after staying up for 72 hours). Well come to think of it, that's probably how I'll look during residency, so maybe med schools want some idea of that now.

Also how much should the picture show? Just face or face and some shoulders?

I would go for something like this, just square up your shoulders though.
