Here is my situation, apologies if this has been addressed before somewhere else. I currently hold an acceptance to one school, and have selected "plan to enroll". I also am on hold at my state school and will be hearing back probably on 4/30 which is when you have to narrow down acceptances to one school. If i were to get accepted at my state school would I have to immediately make a decision on which school to attend, since I would hold multiple acceptances? Thanks.

I believe the decision timeline after April 30 is school-dependent as noted by the AAMC Traffic Guideline I included below. I doubt you'd have to make a snap decision, more than likely it would be 1 to 2 weeks if you find out in early May. However, I would communicate with your current school and the state school immediately upon hearing back for guidance on their specific timelines.

If you receive additional acceptances following April 30, it is your responsibility to promptly notify any school(s) you have decided to not attend. Your decision should be made by the deadline established by the medical school(s).

I believe the OP is asking about the situation where the state school sends an acceptance on April 29 or even April 30. At this point, OP would have two acceptances and by the rule/guideline has to hold only one as of April 30. I too have thought about this. I don't know the answer / expectation for this situation.

I'd be surprised if the schools move that quickly but in that situation, I would still recommend calling/emailing the schools

just call the school. I doubt any school would hold it against you and force you to make a decision the same day

This is straight from the AAMC protocols regarding how adcoms should treat applicants. Just note that nowadays, these are nothing but suggestions. Schools can do whatever they want, so don't take anything for granted and be sure to check with each school to make sure you know what their expectations are.
  • On or before April 30, permit ALL applicants (except for EDP applicants):
    1. A minimum of two weeks to respond to their acceptance offer.
    2. To hold acceptance offers or a waitlist position from any other schools or programs without penalty (i.e. scholarships).

  • After April 30:
    1. Permit all applicants:
      1. A minimum of five business days to respond to an acceptance offer. This may be reduced to a minimum of two business days within 30 days of the start of orientation.
      2. To submit a statement of intent, a deposit, or both.
So, theoretically, your state school should offer you are least a week or two to make a decision. That would give you the freedom to keep your present PTE while figuring out what to do. As long as your state school doesn't require you to select PTE, the other school won't be able to see the state school acceptance. You don't need their permission to hold it any more than you would if you were called off a WL on 5/2. You just need to know what the state school's deadline is to make a decision, since that's your new deadline to reduce to one A.

I think it moreso depends what the CTE deadline is for the school that has currently offered the acceptance

For sure, since that stops the clock on everything. That is, however, HIGHLY unlikely to be an issue the first week of May. If it is, then OP is really boxed in, unless he gets his state school to make a move before 4/30. Since OP asked about holding multiple As, not about avoiding a CTE deadline, it's probably reasonable to assume this is not an issue here.

the CTE deadlines for both schools are in July so that shouldn't be an issue. Thank you all for you responses!
