I think that I have finally decided to study like a mad woman for the April MCAT (will put me a better position for admissions that year, not willing to risk the late August scenario again). Anyway, my question is about Rec. letters. I graduated in August of last year (2001). When I finally apply (for the 3rd time) it will be in 2003 for matriculation in Fall 2004. I have a lot of great rec. letters sitting in a letter service office at UF but I'm not sure how long they hold them or how long they stay 'good.' 🙂
Because I will not become a student again before then, should I reuse (can I even?) the previous letters or when the time comes, ask my profs and other recommenders if they would be willing to update them. My concern is that I will not be as 'fresh' in their minds though I'd be willing to send them updates on my life and hope they'd be cooperative. Does anyone know the stance of med. schools on this issue? Any thoughts/insights would be greatly appreciated.

i think you should just use those letters. you can ask if they'll update it, after providing them with a new resume.

but it'd also be nice if you could get letters related to what you've been doing during your time off... if possible?

Ditwee, I just wanted to let you know that you can click "contact us" on the bottom of the screen and send Lee Burnett an email. he can then send you your password and you can be the real Ditwee. Then no one will make fun of you for being a newbie. 😀

And welcome to SDN 😀

i graduated in 98 and am now matriculating in fall 02. so i was kind of in your same situation. almost all of my letters were from undergrad professors, and i was really a little worried that they wouldn't remember me but they did. i just provided them with some info about what i had been doing since graduation. have you taken any post-grad courses or done any clinical stuff since grad? i used a post-grad professor (from a JC...i really don't think it matters) and also a clinical person. good luck!
