Hello this is my first post here. I am currently a senior and plan to apply to DO (and maybe a few MD) schools this summer. However, I have a few questions regarding the required coursework. First I am an economics/studio arts major who decided to apply to medical school late in college (my junior year) due to my parents urging me to look at other options (aka a profession other than medicine). I have completed 2 semesters of organic chem with lab, two semesters of gen chem with lab, four semesters of math, two semesters of physics with lab, biochemistry with lab, and genetics with lab. In the year off between undergrad and medical school I plan on taking anatonmy, physiology and an additional english course at a local community college. Will I be able to do this and still apply to schools this summer? Do I need to take intro bio or will the biochem, genetics, anatonmy, and physio count? Also is it OK to take these courses at a comunity college after undergrad? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! 🙂

All the requirements for each school can be found on their websites. How is a school letting you take genetics, and a&p without taking bio. 1 & 2. That seems strange. Definitely need 6 semester hours of English. I am not sure how much a school will like hearing that you are completing requirements at a community college. I went to a community college for my first two years and I got in, but people don't recommend it.

I did a bunch of my prereqs (2 yrs of chem, yr of calc, yr of english) at a cc. I did my first two years there as well. I got in. So assuming that it is only a few classes, I do not think it would matter much.

Thanks for the info. Yeah my university had no problems with me taking biochem and genetics without intro bio. I think i will call the schools I plan to apply to and see if it is alright to skip intro bio altogether.

I had AP credits and skipped Intro Bio during my undergrad--it wasn't an issue. Check with your schools of interest and see how many bio credits they require and just make sure you have enough--but it doesn't have to be intro bio (so yes, your other bio courses should count).
