Hey everyone, I'm an M1 and right now a lot of the specialties I'm interested in are competitive ones. (ENT, Radiology, maybe ortho) If this question has been answered, sorry for duplicating it here.
So I've heard that if you want a competitive specialty, it's a good idea to try to do research in the summer after your first year, since it's really your only free summer to do so. I really enjoyed the research I did in undergrad and I don't have anything else I'm dying to do with my summer break, so I'm looking through some of my profs' research interests to see if anything looks interesting.
I was wondering if research conducted outside a medical school/HSC is every bit as good as research conducted at one's medical school? The undergrad research I did was medically relevant, and I am pretty sure I will be able to publish as a primary author if I went back to my undergrad to research over the summer. I keep up well with my old research prof and I'm pretty sure he could find a little money for me and I'd get free housing.
I'm just concerned because it isn't clinical, and it isn't even with graduate students. Is this a problem at all? It's also not relevant to any of the specialties I'm looking at. Thanks!
