Hi all,

I’m an incoming M1 to a USMD program. I’m open minded but if I had to pick specialties of interest, it would be PM&R/FM/IM.

With that being said, I understand that these tend to be less competitive specialties. I’m also aware that prior to Step 1 becoming P/F, doing research activity was not necessary to match into these specialties (excluding the ivory tower IM programs)

Would anyone know if there’s a greater emphasis on research for these specialties now that step 1 is pass/fail? I have minimal research experience (0 pubs) from undergrad and I’m just not sure how research in medical school will be. I’ll look to do some to get my feet wet, however I don’t intend on doing the “rat race” to go into specialties that, outside of the pay, are not appealing to me personally.
