Can anyone tell me if most path programs require Step 2 to be completed before ranking them for the match? Also, excuse my ignorance (I've been in the lab for 3 years), but what month are the rankings submitted?

Hi phillystudent,

Ranking deadline is February 23 for the current cycle.

Step 2 is a bit of a grey area. Bottomline:

Programs like to see Step 2 scores if possible - from previous discussions on this forum a good plan is to take it by December and have it available for the ROL deadline, then depending on whether you think your score will help you, choose to release it.

Dartmouth requires step II before you match. (New Hampshire has a law requiring it to be passed, so therefore they require you to have passed it before you are ranked). At least, they act like they do. When I sent in my step II score to them around january, they replied with a message about them being happy because now they would be able to rank me.

If you are an IMG, step II is more important than if you are an AMG. But, either way, it can only help you to do well and submit this before the ranks are due.

Step II is only a gray area if you don't do so well. I know it works out better for many to take it later in the year, but unless your schedule is so busy that it prevents you from making any reasonable studying effort, you should take it before february. It is very nice to have your score back and be able to submit it to programs.

One of my invite letters warned that I have to sit for Step 2 prior to ROL time. Hmm...was it VCU perhaps? Or UNC? At any rate, I think they will inform you what they need from you either prior to inviting you, or at the time of invite.
