So I've been lucky enough to find a DO who has agreed to let me shadow her for one day. I was hoping to get a letter of recommendation from her, but I had a few questions:

1) Do I need more than 1 day of shadowing before asking for a LoR?
2) What exactly is the best way to ask for one? Mention it at the end of the day? Send her a letter?
3) What information do I need to give her if she agrees to write it? Should I write my personal statement first?

4) Any other tips or things you would recommend for a shadowing experience I would greatly appreciate.

Thank you! 🙂

First and foremost, I would look at the LOR thread from this last cycle, here.

1) This really depends on the doc, but I would wait for at least a few days, if not week or two (shadowing 2-3 times a week).

2) I talked directly to the doc I shadowed in person about it. He was happy to do it, and knew that most DO schools require/recommend one. If you are seeing them regularly, I'd talk in person. If not, you can send an email/call to set up a meeting (you could even mention why you want to meet with them, i.e. LOR), and then in person ask them for the letter.

3) You should bring your CV, personal statement, etc. when you meet with them so they have more personal info about who you are.

4) See thread above.

1) Unfortunately, I will only be shadowing for 1 day. Does this essentially mean I won't be able to get a LoR?

3) I haven't written either -- is it OK to send it later? The doctor already knows a bit about me.

Thanks!

1) You could try asking, its really up to them. But you can't shadow them for more than that?

3) At least make your resume and give it to them. Maybe just write a little bio/pseudo cover letter thing just so they have specific stuff to include about you. Neither has to be perfect obviously.

Again, check out the thread I linked to for more info.

Thanks for all the input. If I were to ask for more shadowing time, would I ask at the end of the day?

So give them the resume like at the beginning of the day?

Thanks again.

Honestly there is no set way of doing things, but I would give them the resume when you ask for the letter. You must have talked to them in order for them to agree to have you shadow them, so you should be able to get a feel for when a good time is.

In terms of asking for more time to shadow them, I would just ask at the end of the day if there were any other days you could shadow them.
