If you volunteered for a one-time only event, like an earthquake relief effort for the people in China, is it okay if you report that on your AMCAS? I want to do it because I feel strongly about what I had to do that day, the cause for which I was volunteering for.

What about something like being part of a phone bank during the elections for one of the parties?

Thanks

I would probably say don't mention the political campaigning if you only did it one day. It seems like a bit of a stretch, because if political activism was important to you you would most likely have put much more time into it rather than just the one day. The earthquake relief effort I'm not so sure about. I have a similar event I'm considering listing that, while just one day, was important to me. Anybody else want to weigh in on this? Maybe combine isolated volunteer events into one entry?

Oops. I just realized you said you were part of a phone bank, which could indicate sustained involvement over a period of time. If that's the case, I'd say feel free to list it.

I think what's important is what it meant to you, not the duration, so I say go for it. Particularly if it was something that evolved your perspective on medicine or community service, or some aspect of life that relates to those things.

putting down the one-time volunteer event sounds like major padding to me...if it meant something to you maybe you can work it into your PS

did you go to china to do the relief efforts?

or did you fundraise/plan through out the semester for the relief efforts?

or did you just show up like circling the track once for relay for life?

I had quite a few one day experiences like this. I put it in a slot called extra volunteering. Then I described (shortly) each of the activities I had done. Through random 1 day things I had like 30+ hours so I did want to include them, but I didn't have room to include them separately...

this. 👍

(incidentally, that's what i did for all my shadowing.)

ooh, good idea, buffywannabe! I ended up leaving off my one day volunteering experiences, but that would have been a better way to go about it!

No, but would I have to be either of the above to mention it? and goto China? if that's the minimum criteria for what works/activities to put in then most people would have nothing.
