Hello,

From what I've heard, it is important to get a letter from your PI as well as some type of science professor. I actually met my PI through taking her class (Cell Bio, 4.0'd it) and then joined her lab afterwards and I've been working with her for a little over a year now. I know she'll write me a letter as she's already mentioned that she's willing but I had a couple questions:

-Should I ask her if she could only write about the research portion and then ask another prof for a science letter?
-Have her write about her experience with me in class and the lab and that covers those 2 letters that I "need"?
-Or even if she writes about both experiences will I still need a separate science letter?

Thank you!

Have it be your science letter. Two birds with one stone if she also discusses the research aspect, which she most likely will. Better to have less letters but higher quality than a bunch of fluffy letters that don't say much.

Yeah just have her include both in class setting as well as in research, it will most likely be a very strong letter

I would have her write about both her classroom and lab experiences with you. FWIW--I would also provide her with prepared bullet points that she could string together into a letter if she so chose.
