Hi

Im applying to surgery prelims, but my 3 letters are coming from 2 anesthesiologists and my medicine attending. its going to be hard now to get a letter from a surgeon, but was wondering if you guys think this will be a proble. Also I am sending in my statement geared to anesthesia.

thanks for the help

Can't you get a letter from your clerkship director from 3rd year in surgery? It's not that late yet for prelims and it might be worthwhile asking. I didn't apply for any sugery prelims but I had friends who didn't match ortho and plastics who did so this is the crowd that you're in. Seems to me that with the increased competitiveness of gen surg you're playing in a more competitive field that if you apply to TY and prelim medicine. Can't knock your choice though, I'm doing a TY year and these floor medicine and peds months are torture. I'll take being in an OR anyday. Of course my 5 elective months with no call sure ain't bad! I really can't complain too much I guess.

I don't think it'll be much of a problem. Surgery prelim programs are usually avoided like the plague because no one wants to work surgery hours if they don't have to. However, they may be appropriate for those going into anesthesiology or surgical subspecialties. Just look at the # of unfilled positions each year from scutwork.com. Last year there were tons of leftover spots, many at good university programs, like BU, Tufts, Dartmouth, Mt Sinai, NYU, etc...even BID went unfilled.
