Hi, I have a question about TA-ing. In my school (Stony Brook University), Undergraduate TAs do not get paid, but they get an upper division credit for being a teacher's assistant. I was a TA for Organic Chemistry and Health psychology and was wondering if this is considered extra curricular. I feel like it is but since I got credit, I don't know. what do you guys think?

I would still count it like an EC.

I TA'd and didn't get course credit for it. I counted it as an EC.

I think given the nature of the work, which is significantly different from course work, it would be acceptable to count this as an EC.

(edit: see next post)

Actually, I'm going to have to think about this...

b/c if you got credit for a clinical experience, would you still be able to count that? I don't think you're supposed to count nursing clinicals as ECs.

the more I think about it, I'm actually leaning towards not counting it.

lots of people get course credit for research that they count as EC, so my guess would be it should count.

yes it is, i wouldnt consider it "volunteering" but is definitely and EC

When I TA'd and got a grade (I have 7 "classes" of TA'ing), I listed them under my courses (since they were on my transcript) and also put them in the activities/work/whatever section. There didn't seem to be any problem with doing it this way.

I am a TA for Biology, but I get paid for it. I did not put it on my AMCAS because I only got the position this summer. However, it does make for some good essay material 😉.
