Hey there med students... I'm holding down a lab tech job to keep clothes on my back and the cell phone bill paid. My question is what are you guys doing to get that green while in medical school? I haven't heard of anyone having a part time job while in med school, so I'm not too sure what I'm going to do come this August to keep that paper flowing. I know those military scholarship folk get a nice little stipend to keep them in the game, but will I be straight broke for the next 4 years 😱 Please say it ain't so, I can't do med school studying with an undergrad wardrobe :scared:

L-O-A-N-S

You can cover your entire tuition with loans plus housing, food, etc... So for example, if you go to a private med school where the tuition is $29K/yr, your financial aid office might authorize you to take up to $52K/yr in loans. If you take out the MAX, 52K - 29K = 23K/yr to live on.

most med students that I know are on federal (stafford) and private loans...low interest and don't have to be paid back until after residency is over

I have heard of people who perhaps work 4-8 hours per week. Or teach at Kaplan or TPR. I also have heard of people working research or another job between MS1 & MS2 to put some money back. If I could make enough money to buy groceries, I would be absolutely thrilled. I hate the thought of taking out loans and taking 30 years to pay off that sandwich I just ate.

One interesting thing you can do is participate in experiments, for some field like psych, they are not invasive, also sleep lab, something like that. They don't pay much, but they pay reasonably well for 1-3 hrs of your time 10-15 bucks. Not big deal, but some extra change without gettin a real job. If you workout, you can certify yourself and become a personal trainer, where you make 20-30 bucks an hour, so you can make a nice sum in one day. Just some ideas, but you can pretty much put yourself thru with loans, with not too much trouble. Yea you do put yourself in debt a little more, but its for sake of comfort, your life will be hectic if you are trying to work and studying med school.

Good to hear of someone else who sees disadvantages to indiscriminately spending loan money!

Tutoring, in general, is an excellent way to make money. Pre-meds are practically begging us to take money off their hands in exchange for extra help with passing pre-reqs, acing the MCAT, preparing applications, or getting ready for interviews. Parents of underachieving high school & junior high students are similarly willing to throw money at problems they think you can help them fix. The good thing about tutoring is it's completely flexible & on your terms (and can be entertaining & rewarding, too). Even a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon will keep you in lunch money for the week.

Hey there,
All of you smart and good-looking medical school guys out there can sell your semen (sperm) for a hefty price. If your "seed" makes good-looking babies, you are set for four years and beyond. 😀

Sounds good to me.

There are a few people at my school with jobs. One is a math/science tutor to high school students. Several others work as radiology lab techs in the early evening or as physical therapists on the weekends. They aren't pulling in the dough, but the PT's are making over $100 any given Saturday. The big thing that I noticed about the people with employment is that they already had jobs leading into medical school. None of them opted for new training (e.g., starting at a new lab).

Wow... seems like I got options... sperm selling and everything  Thanks for the input people. Between loan refunds, weekend tutoring, an occasional sperm bank visit, and being an experiment guinea pig... I think I'll be okay 👍

question for those who would donate sperm - how would you feel knowing that your sperm is going to create a child who doesn't know who his/her father is?

wow! :wow:

How do you get into donating sperm? I've tried searching online, but there is nothing available in my area. The few places that I have found---usually located in D.C. or in Texas---don't even post information on their websites about becoming a donor.

If you think of it as "my child" you are not going to be a good candidate for sperm or egg donation. It is the recipient couple's child. The money you get in return from donation is "yours" and you are free to raise or treat that money as you see fit. 🙄

You could also try doing online surveys through PineCone Research. I got $5 for each survey. It pays the beer tab.

I've also once sold plasma. I don't recommend this route.

Why do you not recommend selling plasma?

Surveys? Pinecone is the only good one I beleive.

I don't know anything about surveyscout. It requires people to sign up just to learn about it. I've been using Pinecone Research for about 2 years now and have amassed probably $200 during that time. I've also gotten lots of free stuff ahead of market release. It is the only website that I know of that actually pays people. Unfortunately, I don't think that Pinecone is accepting new members right now. I'll remember to PM you once the company president reopens the site.

Well, sperm donors are used by reproductive fertility centers. Just check for them in the local phone book. Big cities or big universities will have them.
