This is probably a really dumb question, but does anyone have any information on the "care packages/technology packages" that schools send for matriculating students? I want to get an iPad, but also don't want to buy one for myself and then have a school give me another one.

Thank you for the help!

Then wait to see where you end up. Every school is different. There is no general information.

And I have never heard of schools sending "care packages" other than a t-shirt or something. If a school is going to give you a laptop or iPad, it will be at orientation, not via UPS.

Some schools do this. Most don't. But you've made it this far, so just wait until you CTE somewhere, and then buy yourself whatever you want if they aren't going to be providing you with anything. 🙂

Yeah, I guess that's fair. Having one now would just make my life easier for some stuff coming up which is why I was wondering if there was maybe a spreadsheet out there with that information. There are so many spreadsheets that people have made over the years, so I just thought I would ask.

Haven't you asked the students? Yes, it could change dramatically after every year, but I had thought the days of the free laptops and tablets were over. Instead, you could get virtual eyewear for the anatomy lab???

Nope. If anything, it's becoming more prevalent, because schools want to make sure everyone has something that can handle everything they require students to use. But, it's still a PITA to administer, and most schools still don't do it.

"Free." They charge it in the tuition often.
Not often. Always. By definition. Of course, everyone doesn't pay the same price, or anything at all in some cases, but the cost is part of the budget, and the budget is absolutely funded by tuition and fees. Everywhere. Even NYU charges a few thousand in fees.

Yeah, maybe. But I can't see anyone going to the trouble to make and maintain that particular spreadsheet, since it would be the very rare applicant using it to make a decision.

What school are you going to? You might want to try looking in the school-specific threads in this forum or in the allo/D.O. forums.

If you want a new iPad now buy it now. Why wait. It doesn’t matter if your school is giving you one. I have two- one for work stuff-one for books etc. it’s okay to have 2 or even 3. Just be careful that you don’t get them mixed up. Buy one for personal use that is a color.

True point, but I've fielded so much anxiety about operating system compatibility issues with programs... "I just bought a new computer... What do you mean it can't run this program???". 🙂

Yeah, this is why schools are increasingly choosing to provide the technology. I meant it would be a waste of time to create and maintain a spreadsheet, because it will be the very rare applicant making such a big decision based on which school is providing which piece of $1,000 technology, or not. I sure wouldn't! 🙂
