What happens if you get scheduled for an interview, but can't afford to make the trip? For myself, I am 23 years old, and just finished as a full time student. I barely could afford the 500$+ App fees already.... All of the schools I applied to are out of state, and I know for sure one of the schools conducts interviews... NYU (Steinhardt). Will schools be flexible with financial situations if you're over 500 miles away??

I think you will need to find a way to do the interview if you want to be considered. DPT schools are extremely competitive and they have plenty of applicants. You might be able to arrange a phone or skype interview but I don't know if it would carry the same weight as attending in person. If your have much higher than average stats it may help you somewhat. I know how you feel about the cost of this whole process. I guess it will pay off some day. Best of Luck to you !

You must find a way to get to the interview. They're not going to accept financial inability to attend an interview as an excuse . I interviewed at Marymount and the applicant next to me drove from Birmingham, AL, to attend the interview. I drove 20 minutes to get there. I felt so unworthy. I hope that guy was accepted because he showed he wanted it.

Why did you apply to schools if you knew they required interviews and that you couldn't afford to go?

Hmm, I disagree. I feel like schools have to consider the financial aspect of interviews too. As much as I'm sure they prefer meeting you in person, I would SERIOUSLY judge a program that changed their idea of acceptance based on an inability to meet in person. Several schools I've talked to have been totally understanding and open to the idea of a phone or skype interviews. I would say just ask if they have other options. If they sound totally against it, then you know which interviews you have to coordinate travel for.

Out of curiosity I just checked out how much it costs to get a DPT at NYU:

Maybe my math is off, but tuition alone is $109,500 for the whole program. That's just tuition. They give estimated numbers for room and board, books, transportation, personal expenses and health insurance that runs another $31,356 per year.

So all told, the program is estimated to cost $203,568 before application of interest on loans, unforeseen expenses, and increases in cost of living.

You won't cover those expenses with federal loans, so you'll be in the private market where you will get even worse rates than the 6.8% from a Stafford.

The cynic in me says that if you have the good sense and financial discipline to not put a trip to NYC on your credit card, the faculty will probably come to realize that you aren't NYU material.

But then there's a part of me that struggles to be more humane. Maybe the people who go to NYU have radically different financial situations than the rest of us. Cost is not an issue, and they want to get a good education in New York. I knew people who went to grad school while living with family for free in the outer boroughs. There are ways some people make it work.

But you can get a good education in a lot of different places, and NYC is no fun when you don't have money. The debt level that we're talking about here is really crushing, so I'd just like to encourage you to consider whether you'd really accept an NYU offer if it was made.

I've been so worried about getting applications out in time that I haven't even looked at the tuition costs of most of the schools I applied to. I figured I'd worry about that after I got a request for interview or accepted and the cost of the schools would be a deciding factor of whether I'd attend the interview and/or attend the school. But maybe I could have saved a few hundred dollars on application costs and all if I knew some of the school's tuition was too costly for me. I want to go to DPT school but I don't want to be buried in debt. So there is a limit to how much I'll pay for DPT school.

I too applied to NYU and had no idea it was so costly.
