Hello everyone

I saw many posts on SDN talked about residency are paid in VA, it sounds great, but why the application numbers are so small? Applications are much less than other school based programs that even required tuition. Is VA a bad choice for specialist so not many people want to apply? But I saw good comments about the VA too, I am confused. I am currently a D1 interested in PROS and planing to apply PROS residency in the future.

Data from SADV (survey of advanced dental education from ADA), detailed application data is in the attach file, tab 7.

Thanks.

VAs are not as known as the university programs which get a lot of applications based on reputation and legacy. They also only take US citizens, which eliminates all the international applicants that make up a good chunk of the perio/prosth pool. Also, the VA is very different from the typical university setting and is not for people who need their hands held - you are thrown into a patient pool with very complex problems from day 1 and you are expected to hit the ground running.
