Hi,
I want to do an away rotation, in a moderately competitive program--I'm not doing anything as competitive as ortho, however. My problem is that my school's fourth year rotation blocks are 1 week off the rotation blocks of this and other schools. If I want to do an away, and not make too many adjustments in my schedule, I would need to start my away rotation on the last week of their 4 week block and end with the first 3 weeks of the next block.

I hope this is clear. Would it hurt to ask? Would this be too much of an inconvience to their attendings? I would hate to draw attention to myself.

Steve

We have two options at my school:

1. Take a week vacation before the away rotation starts and again after the rotation starts (we must take vacations in 2 week blocks, but we are allowed to split them up for this purpose).

2. We can only split up a non-required elective provided it has proof of all faculty involved and it's our only option.

The use of the vacation time is strongly encouraged!

I did the same for my EM elective at the Univeristy of Maryland... my school does one month blocks, whereas UMD did 4 weeks worth. My elective started last week of October, ended right before Thanksgiving. My school was fine as long as it was okay with the attending that got short-changed (October attending). SHe didn't give a hoot so it was easy money.

I'd buy that for a dollar.

Some programs are very accomodating to visiting fourth years. They may allow you to rotate there on your schedule rather than theirs.

Does your school give you time off for an interview month? If so, depending on when you take it, you may be able to make part of the away rotation coincide with that month. (Or Christmas break, too, if you are given time off for that.)
