When's the latest time that we can update our applications (Md/PhD) for most schools? Say if I get a paper published in October-Dec (just an estimation), would that still affect my application?
And does it help to just say "I've sent the manuscript to ____"?

I know that probably depends on whether or not I get a secondary/interview and it's best to get it on the application. But there's just no way that I can finish the manuscript early enough to have it reviewed by this summer.

I don't know when the latest date is that you can update you application for MD-PhD admissions...I think each school handles updates a bit differently. However, since schools interview from about September to as late as March, and since acceptances go out from mid-October to May (or beyond), sending an update when you submit your paper between October and December would be early enough potentially have an effect on your application. Submitting a paper is a big deal and worth letting schools know about. Be prepared that some schools may ask you the outcome of the submission though too.

One more question: When when turn in our AMCAS app as early as possible (say in June), do all of our rec letters have to be in as well? Or can we turn those in later, as long as our application (incomplete w/o recs) is in, we don't have to worry about the timing so much?

You don't need letters for your primary application to be in. You only need letters when you submit secondary applications to each school. Without the letters, you will be incomplete at specific schools, but can still continue to receive secondaries.

So if I'm planning on turning in my amcas as early as possible (early june) and finish the secondaries also asap when I get them. When's a good deadline to give my letter-writers?
