Hi, everyone
I check some schools' pre-requisite for biochemistry. Some schools require 4 credits/semester for biochemistry;however, in my school we only offer 3 credits for biochem I. Does that mean I must need to take biochem II to fulfill the requirement?

Thanks for any advice

Yeah I'm in the same situation. I'm sure most people on here will tell you to call the schools, which is probably what I'll end up doing. Hopefully they accept it, as I'm sure a lot of universities only offer 3 credit biochem, micro, etc.

Call and ask. For example, Pitt says you need 4 credits but the website is a mistake, you only need 3. Don't put yourself through another class without checking into it.

before I became pre-dent... I was pre-med and some medical schools have a 4-credit biochem requirement..... When I called them and asked, they said its fine if your upper level biochem is 3 credits: "we just wanna see that you've taken one of the biochem series"

Call up the school and see if theyr okay with it...

Is it generally highly recommended to take Biochem II, or simply Biochem I?

Do not stress too much on the credits. some quarter schools will offer only 3 credits while some schools on semester will offer 4. Also, if there is lab included then they offer 4. remember the extra credit is 3 hours of lab, but majority of schools do not include lab with biochem, you need to take it separately. However, do not freak out, its not a big deal. You are going to take Biochem all over again in dental school.

I do advise to focus on undergrad biochem, it will help you a lot in dental school and your Part I of the boards.

Biochem I is an awesoem course! at least in Canadian universities but i'm sure its very similar to US. You learn many important concepts and topics that are all relevant to a life in the field of science or research.

I'm in biochem II and don't like it as much, as the topics get way more specific for what ever your proff feels like talking about.

I've never seen a school recommend biochem II but Biochem I would be a great choice.

Thanks for all the reply and I will contact school to ask them. I really appreciate everyone's advice.

If your school is on the quarter system, you probably need 2 quarters of biochem, depending on the school, of course. Otherwise, usually it is just 1 semester of biochem.

However, I recommend taking as many biochem courses as you can. I took 3 quarters of biochem and I am glad I did, as it helped me when I had to take biochem in dental school. This especially goes for LLU applicants, as the curriculum has recently changed as of the class of 2014. Instead of a whole quarter of biochem, there is a 3 week intensive biochem course done before the fall quarter starts. Therefore, it would behoove you (LLU students will get that reference) to bone up on as much biochem as you can.
