Im looking over the schedule that the faculty gave us during orientation, which has us in class from 8 to 3 or 8 to 5 every day. These all seem like purely didactic classes to me. I was wondering how much time you spend in pre-clinical lab in addition to the 8 - 3 or 8 - 5 days. Something like 4 hours twice a week? I fully realize im going to lose my life in Dental School, just wondering if i'll even have time to go over the day's material, get to the gym, and get 6 hrs of sleep a night. Damn.

I'm a second year and they are changing the curriculum, so your experience may end up being different, but my experience was this: our only preclinical lab 1st semester was dental anatomy and consisted primarily of doing tooth wax-ups. Many of us brought our hanau torches, typodonts, and waxing instruments home and practiced/completed projects there --- it was relaxing to watch tv and wax! My friends and I got together and practiced for practicals at someone's kitchen table. I think I actually only waxed up in lab maybe once outside of class. So -- you can theoretically spend about "zero" hours in preclinic outside of class if you prefer. (I'm only talking about first semester here. You don't really have that option second semester unless you happen to have a dental lab at home.)

You'll be spending much, much, much more time in the gross anatomy lab. Trust me.

Damn, too bad they are changing the curriculum. That sounds pretty relaxed, at least for pre-clinic.

They're changing it for the better, at least that is their goal. Trying to cut out the fluff. Don't get too excited about it being relaxed because you'll still be plenty busy with all your other classes 😀

youll spend quite a lot of time 1st semester studying gross and in gross lab (~constant studying to stay on top of it, ie. cant take more than a couple days off here and there), intermittent and crappy time studying histo (dr. cotter will be your enemy, bank on it), maybe a lot of time studying biochem maybe not much at all (depending on your educational background and the "resources" that you are able to obtain). waxing may take some time depending on how good you hands are, may take very little time as well. the other classes are cake. 1st semester at ub was a great deal easier than i expected (note: i could care less about getting A's, so if youre a gunner what im writing is meaningless. you will have zero life.) and i spent more time doing stuff not associated with school than i ever would have dreamt of in undergrad. ub is great. youll have a blast if you go with the flow. and just wait for 2nd semester. we essentially have two and a half day weeks. also, north campus gym is awesome, and you'll have ample opportunity to enjoy it.

Sound awesome. I figure ill split time between the CV gym and North Gym. Also, I've never been much of a gunner, but my most of my cousins have told me 3 or 4 hours of additional studying per night is almost mandatory in order to not fall behind. Thanks for the info!
