Does anyone have the student health insurance? If so, how do you feel about it? I have graduate student insurance at my current school and although it wasn't the greatest for off-campus services, it was useful for the student health center.

What about the health center in general? Is it an ok place or more of a quack shack?

I have the CSU insurance... at first I hated it and never used the health center (I had no reason for this hatred of it!) Then I switched to AVMA insurance... which was OK... but they don't cover healthy prevenative med type visits (so stupid!!!) and I pretty much only used them once for that and had to shell out $300 for my yearly physical and stuff (after paying over $1400 for 6 months!!). So then I switched back to the CSU insurance... and have actually used it a bunch this year. So far I havent had to pay anything out of pocket and the doctors I have seen have been actually pretty decent. The health center has a lab, radiology, pharmacy, immunizations, optometrist, women's health, dentist, nutrition, physical therapy, regular sick doctors, psychiatry, and probably some other things I am missing. You only get a $250 pharmacy benefit each year, but for me that has been enough. Here is the link to the health center: http://hartshorn.colostate.edu/ You sign up for the insurance semester by semester, so you can give it a whirl for the first semester and see how you like it.

Even if you dont have the CSU insurance, you can still use the health center since you pay the health fee each semester. I believe appointments are free and labs/tests are discounted.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks SOXBOX! I am glad you responded because I have another CSU question that only a current vet student could answer.

I received the "required" book list today. I want to know if the Veterinary Consult (VC) titles are worth the extra money? I found all of the required books on Amazon and they were about 20-30 dollars cheaper than VetText however, Amazon does not offer VC. So basically I was wondering if I should buy them on Amazon at a cheaper price and go without the VC or buy them from VetText at a much higher rate and get the VC?

Hey 🙂 Well first year I did not get any vet consult books... but as of this year I try to only buy them... I really think they are great... You get your entire book downloaded onto your computer and the more books you have with VC the bigger your library, so when you search for say, hemangiosarcoma, it will search all your textbooks. You can also have access to your entire collection of books that you have Vet Consult from any computer with internet access.

I have also started to buy the vet consults and then sell the actual textbooks, making back almost all of my money. So I am a huge fan now! If you want, I can send you the email of our VetText manager and he can give you the full scoop on VetConsult... there is a lot more that it can do and he knows it pretty well. Also, if you happen to be coming out here anytime soon, you can stop by VetText and check it out as they have a computer set up in there with lots of vetconsult books, so you can see it in use!

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask away!!! It is way more fun answering them than studying for finals 🙂

I think it's the same thing, so I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. I bought the texts that had a vet consult option, too, and I love it. I never thought of selling back the actual hard copy book (interesting idea!) but I love it. I have those books with me all the time on my computer and it's searchable! I think everything in life should be key word searchable. Fantastic. 🙂

I am glad that the vet consult option is helpful. I wasn't sure it was worth the extra cost but I think I am sold now.

Hey Soxbox,

How do I get to my CSU email? Is there a link on the homepage?

Also, how do I get a parking pass? Do I have to sign up for one or is it included in my tuition?

Sorry about all the questions but I am not sure who else to ask.

lets see... parking permit... nope... definitely not included in tuition... they like to charge us for everything possible 🙂 Last year I think it was around $140 or so... not sure what it is going up to this year. You get your parking permit at the csu police station or online (though I think to do it online you need to have your email ID) The link with all the parking details is here: http://parking.colostate.edu/index.asp

Here is the link to get your email ID: https://eid.colostate.edu/ I dont remember what info you need to sign up... but at least it will tell you if you have what you need... have you gotten a CSU student ID number yet? I honestly cannot remember how I did all of that stuff or how any of it arrived (like via email or mail)...

Hopefully that will help you out a bit... and keep those questions coming... I still have 3 more finals to procrastinate from studying for 🙂

I am not a CSU student, but was interested in learning about the Veterinary Consult (VC) option that was mentioned. Do other schools have this option with their texts as well? It sounds like it would be really helpful...I hope Ohio State has this program!

rachroo,

The VC options are offered by the book publisher (Elsevier) and should be an option when ordering through any school's bookstore.

SOXBOX.....You are the GREATEST! Thanks so much, you have helped tremendously. I have gotten my CSU student ID and all that good stuff but I wasn't sure how to access the email. Thanks again!
