Question for preceptors....

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can you give a student an "A" on rotation, good evaluation, then turn around and report them to their school for being unprofessional.

Yes, but you (the preceptor) would appear to be an idiot. Of course, you could have performed well and still acted unprofessionally. Hard to say..

Let me guess, the student bailed unprofessionally right after the evaluation?

Depends on what you call "bailing". This rotation ended on thursday and the preceptor insisted I come in and make up 6 hrs I had taken off to attend to some family issues. we agreed that I will come in on tuesday. I went there on tuesday at 9.30am and worked till 3.30pm without taking any break (that's 6 hrs right ?). I took my stuff to leave and the guy wanted me to stay till they close at 5.30 pm. I would have stayed if they had cared about me learning anything on this rotation but I was basically used as a cheap labor and I wasn't prepared to give them even 1 min more of my time. I completed my hours and that's all that matters, so I left.

I don't know if that qualifies as "unprofessional" but you do seem to have a bit of an attitude about this rotation.

I won't lie to you, I hated this rotation from the first day I walked in there. the technician who happens to be the owner's mother-in-law runs the place. it is an independent compounding pharmacy with one pharmacist and a tech, so they rely heavily on students. I wouldn't have had a problem with that if they had ways of making students feel like they are gaining something too. they were very unappreciative of all the work I did for them . Sometimes, people forget to use simple manners, then they turn around and talk about being unprofessional. Saying "please" and "thank you" goes a long way when you are using someone you know you are not paying.

In that case, you deserved it. You're lucky you got a decent grade on the rotation, so count your blessings.

If I was in your situation I would have just taken a 2 hour break at 3PM and come back at 5PM, work till 530PM and situation resolved.

I've noticed that some preceptors are VERY strict about hours/timesheets, like they will want you to record the exact minute that you come in/leave.

2 hours break ? hahahah. I barely got 30 mins break on this rotation. The problem is that they kept printing out logs of all these medications they were hoping I was going to restock for them before the end of the day. Clearly, he would have prefer I stand there and work until 5.30PM. No one even bothered to ask me to take a break till that 3.30PM. It was all about getting the most they could get out of me that day.

I think it depends on what you said/how you left.

There is two sides to any story. I have learned to pick and choose my battles. I had a rotation at Wags that matches what you describe there but I "smiled" my way to the very end. I even ended up getting a gift certificate.

It seems that the preceptor was well aware of how you felt about them and they chose to make your life hell in return. Still, you are lucky they gave you a passing grade. Its just how it is.

I agree.

I have to say OP, it sounds like one of those times that you should have just sucked it up. Can you rate the rotation through your school? That may have been a better option.

Do you think having a bad attitude helped the situation at all?

Yep, our school allows grading of the preceptors/sites by students as well. I had a terrible public health rotation at a battered women's shelter/advocacy group back in first year. At one point they had me babysitting children of battered women. (No ****ing way was I ready for that.)

The preceptor was a really sweet 25 year old babe though so I just did what I had to do to get through it. When site evaluation time came by, I gave the site a negative review. Apparently other students also gave it a negative review so they followed up on it and they put in some strict rules about what we should be doing, but I think it is no longer a site now.

PS: Is it okay to date a former preceptor?

Why wouldn't it be?

I don't know how it is at other schools but our rotation site coordinators are very explicit about us telling them if the site is using us as cheap labor.

Did you inform your rotation coordinator of this issue beforehand?

This is the only thing I regret not doing. I came very close to doing that but my husband talked me out of it. He encouraged me to just see it as part of the training. I sucked up alot on this site just to keep myself sane for that 6 weeks. I even started watching "Dancing with the stars" because that's all they talked about and I wanted to ease the tension by joining the conversation....lol. I got an "A" on this rotation because they couldn't deny how hard I worked. They knew how I felt about them by day 3 and they were begging me not to quit. I'm meeting with our APPE coordinator on monday and I will tell her everything. Hopefully, it's not too late.

You should keep him around. He seems like a smart guy.

Honestly, I think a lot of my rotations were like this, but I just made the most of it and sucked it up. Even if it's a horrible rotation, it's only for one month. 4 weeks. 20 days. In a year from now you're not going to remember the extra two hours you would have worked. Just my opinion.

You think I had a bad attitude ? I don't think I did seriously. If my preceptor had asked me politely to stay till 5.30pm and help them out, I would have done just that. Instead he said as a preceptor, he is demanding I stay.

Perhaps I should have said negative attitude.

There are 2 sides to every story. If this rotation site was so bad, then you should have known about it..unless this is the first time they decided to precept.

Typically when choosing a rotation, you have an idea what to expect by talking to others. Unless you do not socialize nor know anyone in school.

If your preceptor felt you were unprofessional, then something had to prompted your preceptor to report you that way. Being a preceptor can be a lot of work. More often than not, students just get in the way.

It would certainly be interesting to hear your preceptor's side of the story. I for one never used students as a free labor but at the same time it wasn't my job to appreciate students as precepting was additional work and time on my part.

If indeed this rotation sucked, then let others and school know of such.

This site became available on thursday because the student that was scheduled to go there bailed on them last min. I was informed of the site on friday and I started on Monday. I had even gone to orientation at my originally scheduled site and was offered this one because I had requested for sites close to my house. Just like I said, he gave me good evaluations . It will be interesting to hear his own side of the story though. I know when being a preceptor can be a lot of work and I believe that students do get in the way. This was not the case. This is an indepent compounding pharmacy that depends on students instead of hiring enough help. I never saw the pharmacist compound anything for the 6 wks I was there.
