Hi,
I am starting residency as a PGY I this summer. I have done 6 mo of residency at a different program before. When the time comes to apply for a independent practicioner license , will the board contact all programs you were part of or just the one where you completed residency? Also, I will be repeating PGY I. Just curious
Thanks!

When you apply for a license, you will be required to disclose all prior training. You should assume that the board will contact all of your past programs.

From my son's personal experience in applying and obtaining a state license to practice medicine, YES "ALL" previous postgraduate residency training programs will be contacted. His first year was Prelim GS, full 12 months, than 3 full years of FM. Less than 30 days will be attending in FM/Urgent Care. He obtained unrestricted licenses in Fl, NY, NJ. Each state's Board of Medicine contacted his GS program for recommendation and completion documentation. The OP stated only 6 months of 1st year training which makes me wonder and inquire was there an issue, why ONLY 6 months??? If there was an dismissal or issue, the OP needs to address this in their application.

No, there was no dismissal ot discipilanary action- left on my own due to harrassment by the program. I did receive an email after I quit from the state board asking why I left. I am not sure if responding to them would mean filing a complaint against the program, which I am not intending to pursue.

State medical boards do not get involved again disciplinary action against residency programs thus reporting your action will not be seen as any sort of complaint against the program.

You will need to come up with a brief passionless statement of the facts and save it as a file on your computer. Every time you apply for a license or credentialing you will be asked to provide this information.

Thank you, that really clears up things for me- some of these questions, I don't know who to ask. So thankful to have you and other attendings on this forum. I do have such a file I used when I reapplied to other programs. It is a very professional statement, used it for both interviews and email correspondence with programs. I will send a letter to the state board using this info.

While on the subject, I should probably ask- I received this piece of paper during the exit interview that basically says that I did not complete first year hence I should not practice Medicine independently, which is fine. It also has a section that shows my numeric averages for evals which are average or better, a section showing subjective evaluations (text), a section that has check boxes showing I have no medical/beh/psych conditions, no malpractice/disciplinary actions that would limit my ability to practice medicine and a general impression section, which is for the most part pretty supportive. My only question is about what is in the subjective evaluation section- my attendings were very harsh to everyone so, this has a mixed picture. It says something about my ability to prioritize and process information. Do I need to worry about this?

Mostly, no. It sounds like your prior program gave you a fair evaluation / summary statement. Some text saying that you vaguely need to improve, when you only spent 3 months there, is fine. Some boards can be a PITA -- Cali, NY, MA, and TX come to mind. Apply in those states, and anything can happen.

Thank you again, you guys are priceless! People like you make me feel positive about Medicine and why I started the journey. There are changes to come in Medical Education that are long overdue and you are the positive agents for the change.
