Assuming all the other qualifications are good, how likely is a optometry school going to accept you if you've previously been dismissed from med. school.

I think it depends on the reason for the dismissal. If you were found to be cheating or something similar I don't think optometry or any school would be very accepting.

Agreed, If it was your choice, because its not what you wanted to do, then there are other ways to express why you know optometry is right for you.

But maybe its the way you present yourself that is going to make the difference, even if you were dismissed from med school.

If admissions gets the slightest impression that you're only doing optometry b/c you were dismissed from med school, they will not accept you. Shadow, do some research, etc. and make SURE it's something you want to do! I have a few classmates who have been to dental, PT, OT school previously and for whatever reason chose optometry, so it's possible to switch - but it depends on the circumstances.

I would assume it would depend on whether you removed yourself or were asked to leave due to grades. Get involved with optometry for a while and see if you like it. If you just want to be a doctor of some type, go do a PhD.

thanks for the info. guys. Since i'm just starting, how do I get a list of schools and what else do i need before applying.

I know of two people that had a similar situation to yours......One got in and one did not. Being academically dismissed from a Professional School Program is a big red-flag and the admissions committee will be vary wary of you. The will wonder, "so he failed out of Medical school.....why would he survive optometry school..." You have to have a very good reason, an honest one why you "fell apart" in med school. You will have to do three things:

1) get a very good OAT score 340 and above
2) take some graduate level science courses right now to prove yourself and show the admissions committee that you have the intention of self improvement. Get good grades too!
3) if you can get a recommendation letter from a professor in a recent class (not in the med school) that would help as well....

I asked a couple of persons in admissions here after I read your post and these are the things that were mentioned. Realize that the doctor of optometry program is a tough program and you will work equally as hard as you did before........ Good luck!!!

Quite unlikely, assuming all other "qualifications" are just good.
