In San Antonio we had our own specific carving instruments that were developed by someone from San Antonio. I used the Hollenbeck most of the time to do my carving because it was the sharpest instrument we had. Also, getting used to the Hollenbeck would help when carving amalgam with the Hollenbeck. Just pick an instrument that is comfortable for you and try to use that instrument for everything. I rarely used anything aside from the Hollenbeck. Carving is an artistic skill. If you are very artistic then it will come naturally to you after you get used to the medium (i.e. get used to the flowing of the wax and the consistency of the wax when carving. This probably doesn't help much.
