So far, I've been studying with Kaplan BB, and I took some of their subject tests. One question goes,
The IUPAC name for the compound below is..?
CH3-CH2-CH(CH2CH3)-CH2-CH2-C(CH3)2-CH3
And the answer (according to the answer sheet) is 5-Ethyl-2,2-Dimethylheptane.
But I was just watching Chad's video and he was saying that the prefixes (di-, tri-, etc.) should be counted when alphabetizing.
In that case, the answer for above question should be 2,2-Dimethyl-5-Ethylheptane.
Which way is the correct way(counting the prefix when alphabetizing or not)????
