Question on English Prereq

From Berekely's site, they say to take 1 year of writing-intensive English to be safe, and I'm not sure what that means. Is the 1 year meaning 2 semester or 1 semester? Can I take one semester of writing-intensive English and the second one is literature-based? Or does both have to be writing-intensive?

It means 2 semesters. Any course designated as writing intensive by your college should suffice. The courses don't necessarily have to be under the English department.
