So if I'm interested in specializing in a non-primary care field, and fairly certain that I will be applying to allopathic residencies, should I try to get involved in research for publication, even though most of the research being done at my school has a primary care focus?
This is something I'm pretty confused about. Am I correct in assuming that its a good idea to get experience doing research on say, diabetes, even though I might be applying to residencies for which this would have little relevance. I'm aware that most competitive residencies want to see student involvement in research. If I had an opportunity to work on primary care oriented research during my 1st and 2nd year, should I do it and hope it would open doors to further research opportunities during 3rd and 4th yr that might be more applicable to residencies I might wish to apply to?
How have you more experienced folks handled this?
