I was having a bit of a problem using the biochemistry section of the deck. A lot of the questions take a sentence from first aid, omit the most important word and ask you to recall. However when your done recalling the word it adds a lot of this extra information from First aid which the card did not explicitly ask for but is somehow related. Any tips on recalling this extra information or is it merely extraneous information that serves as background information and you don't need to explicitly recall.

Ex.

".... is a form of phenylketonuria that arises due to a lack of proper dietary therapy during pregnancy."

In the top Maternal PKU is the answer. However the problem arises because in the answer it adds all of the symptoms of Maternal PKU:

"Infant presents with microcephaly, intellectual disability, growth ******ation and congenital heart defects."

Now in this scenario it may have been obvious that if its asking for the disease I might also want to recall the symptoms. However this is not the case.

For example:

....... is a disorder of amino acid metabolism that can result from a decreased affinity of Cystathionine Synthase for Pyridoxal Phosphate (Vitamin B6).

The answer is homocytinuria. But in contrast to the first card it does not give the symptoms of homocystinuria in the extra information but gives the treatment.

Treatment: greatly increased B6 and increased cysteine in the diet.

i used this deck extensively and can offer my own experiences with the same thing you bring up.

first off, my suggestion would be to not use brosencephalon for biochemistry. brosencephalon is best for pathology. Then he has decks for the various organ systems (like all the anatomy, physiology, and embryology for cardiology). Those decks are also pretty sound. biochemistry is important for step 1 but it's not worth doing 1000+ cards for it given how much biochem shows up on step 1. but that's just my opinion. he also has decks for pharm but added in a lot of extraneous information from his class.

my alternative was to use picmonic for biochemistry. picmonic doesn't cover everything but covers most of the diseases and syndromes. For pathways, I just memorized those on my own. i also just used picmonic for pharm. I also made image occluder cards from first aid with anki rather than use brosencephalon b/c of the extra info he added.

anyways, for the thing you bring up, here's what I did. if the backside of the card brings up new information in italics [like what you mention], if i deemed that extra information was important, I would hit "e" on my keyboard, and then anki brings up the screen to edit the card. I would cut and paste that extra information from the "extra" part of the card to the "back" side of the card. Once it's on the back side, I would highlight the pertinent part of the text i wanted to be tested on, and hit "Cntrl+Shift+C". That makes the selected part another "Cloze Deletion", where that text will pop up as its own card later. this way, you ensure that you'll be tested on that extra information.

I did this extensively, b/c a lot of times those extra words in italics show up in UWorld and question banks. i would also use the Contrl+Shift+C on disease mechanisms (since these are tested a bunch on step 1), or anything else important.

in short, it's important to make sure you're tested on those extra details, and doing this doesn't take so long once you get the hang of it

sometimes if a card said "Von Gierk'es disease has lactic acidosis, hypoglycemia, and nausea", I would highlight those 3 symptoms, hit "Cntrl+Shift+C", but then put a "(3) before the symptoms, so that when i got to the card, i knew that the card was asking me to list 3 symptoms.

once you get in a rhythm it doesn't really take that long. i found the deck a great use of time. again i just did all the path cards, all the organ systems, and none of the pharm, immuno, microbio, or biochem. i used picmonic extensively for pharm, biochem, micro, and immuno. scored in the 250s incase you were curious. good luck!

is there anyway to use brosencephalon system wise? or is it only random use?

edit: also how do you increase the card showing from 20, to maybe 40, or 60?

Why are there multiple versions of this deck?
