Hey everyone!
I am a current freshman at Oklahoma State University. You may think I'm crazy but my home state is Missouri. I came to OSU because I love the campus and the atmosphere; it just felt like home. I didn't realize this but MU is supposed to have a really good vet school. So, my dilema: Am I going to be penelized by MU for going out-of-state for my undergrad?

P.S. Do you all know anything about OSU's vet school b/c there was an article in our school newspaper that talked about OSU vet school being ranked really low due to funding by the state. I just didn't know where to go to research this information.

Thanks

You left MO to go to school. As long as that stays your purpose while you are gone it should not effect your MO residency (assuming you are paying out of state tuition at OSU now). The best thing you can do is to contact UM Columbia CVM and ask them what their residency policy is.

I don't think you'll be penalized at all. Lots of people go out of state for undergrad. What I would do is attempt to establish residency in both places. I did this years ago, but have since lost residency in the second state b/c the property was sold and I moved back to my home state.

Check to see what you would need to be considered a resident for OK-Vet. Probably you should try to get a drivers license in OK, try to work full time at some point, and possibly buy property if that is an option. You should however probably always list your "permanant address" as somewhere in Missouri (typically your parents house), but in general, once you've grown up somewhere, so long as you haven't been gone for centuries, you can claim residency.

As for the low ranking... I would suggest forming your own opinion. Rankings are based on a lot of things that, at least to me, don't really reflect the quality of the education. I think it is important to look at what the school has to offer for your particular interest. As you can probably tell from my screen name, I'm planning on specializing in equine and large animal medicine, which sounds like is your plan as well. I applied to OK, in part, b/c I believe that they have a large large animal case load and would be able to provide me with ample expertise and experience.

I should be visiting OK shortly, so I might have more info then.
