Question on work experience

I have a friend of mine, who to sum it up didnt get accepted to any medical school. Then he worked for a year at a local hospital. Applied again and got accepted. Did he do something else im not aware of? Why did he get accepted?

Hard to say. Improved his clinical experience. Maybe he interviewed better second round. Also, there's a certain amount of luck in applying.
