I know this I should go see the doctor after this happening but since it is 3:00 in the a.m. I figured maybe I can get at least a partial answer to this.

I am a 20 y/o male in good health. My only real problem is TMJ.

This evening while sitting at the computer, I opened my mouth a little ways and felt a pain and pressure on the underside of my chin and into the floor of my mouth. It felt like a nodule or a lump of some sort, inbetween the very front of my chin and my adams apple. I could feel it very easily when touching it on the underside of my chin. I rushed to the mirror to see if I could see a lump but by then it had disappeared. I thought right away that it may be a muscle or lymph node. It scared me very badly because it hurt and was a tangible "lump".

Does anyone have any ideas on what might've caused this? My last meal was shrimp and crab legs at Red Lobster, but I am not allergic to any of that. In fact, I have no allergies that I know of.

please help

Medical advice on SDN is not allowed as far as I am aware. When you open your mouth sometimes the submandibular gland can have pressure applied to it and eject a stream of saliva from the duct opening under your tongue. What MIGHT have happened, is pressure was put on the gland when you opened your mouth and perhaps the gland became "backed up" with saliva. As in something blocking the flow of saliva.

If you are having difficulty breathing, dizziness, palpitations or chest pain I would dial 911.

Call 911 now. STAT. Go to you your nearest ED now. You are lucky to have even been alive to type your question.

dxu-

how are you feeling now? Has the pain repeated in the same area? Anyother symptoms?

I feel okay. After the episode the area where the "lump" appeared became red and itchy. This could have been caused from me feeling the area. since then however the pain, redness, and itchiness have almost disappeared. I also decided I needed something to eat, so I am now munching on some pop-tarts but it does not feel like there is as much saliva as normal. This seems to be the only symptom. I am also having a little anxiety because of this whole thing.

Usually it wouldnt "back up" on itself, you can get that with a stone or sialolithiasis, to cause a back up in the gland. Had a pt. with it one time, weird. Usually it will happen at times when your producing saliva, etc..eating, looking at a hot chick, etc...

You may want to see your doctor in the morning if you are still anxious about what happened. I haven't started my residency, and I don't know where niner is in his/her training but nothing comes to mind about the validity of his comment.

On a scale of 1 to 10 what was the pain like?

I was using layman terms 🙂 I don't know dxu's level of education or medical awareness and I didn't want to confuse him.

That's what I was thinking, though. He might want to suck on some lemons and see if that gets the saliva flowing.

It has completely diminished to the point of not even being detectable. Like I said, there was a lump one sec and then gone the next sec. It can almost be described as a muscle popping out of place. Any thoughts?

p.s. thanks for the help

Plastikos,

I am more interested in your thoughts on ninerniner's post above.

To not post at least a couple posts later is poor form for sure.

Not today..

seriously, should I be okay based on my description?

Could have been an intense buildup of saliva from that.

Might have been referred pain from the TMJ. Glad you were "on call" with me tonight, plastikos.

No one has the balls to say anything crazy like that on a message board. But if this were a question where it went: Mr. X presents with these symptoms, no past history/meds/disease of any kind, my first thought would be a salivary gland stone. It will happen again in a sporadic fashion quite possibly if this is the case. Unfortunately real life is sometimes a tricky bastard, and lawyers do in fact grow on trees.

So if your AT ALL worried, go to the doctor as you feel is appropriate.
