Hello everyone,

I am thinking about retaking Organic chemistry C at other university this summer.

At my university, Organic Chemistry C is 4 quarter unit for lecture and 0 unit for lab.

At the university I'm planning on taking, Organic Chemistry C lecture is 4 quarter unit and 2 units for lab course.

I received a C- at my home university.

My question is, Can I just take the lecture portion at the other university since it's the same course and same number of units without taking the lab again?

Also, I plan on retake courses after I graduate this June for one academic year. But, I came to noticed that I will only be around 3.19 or 3.2 after the retakes, meaning June 2016. for both cGPA and sGPA.

My MCAT right now is 32, but I'm retaking the new MCAT.

I feel like I don't stand a chance. So I'm planning on applying for WesternU MSMS program.

But, Should I just think about Caribbean school? U of Q Ochsner?

I would love to hear your answers because the deadline to apply for summer course is approaching soon!

Thank you!

Have a wonderful day!

Yes! Retake classes.

My MCAT right now is 32, but I'm retaking the new MCAT.
NO! Don't retake.

I feel like I don't stand a chance. So I'm planning on applying for WesternU MSMS program.
NO! You have good chances. Don't waste your money on a masters.

But, Should I just think about Caribbean school? U of Q Ochsner?
NO! Never go Carib.

Don't waste money on a masters unless your parents are paying your way. Spend a year retaking your low-grade classes and you'll be fine for D.O. I'd even apply MD honestly.

There will still be a lot of students applying with a 1-45 scored MCAT. A retake is absolutely unnecessary.

I was going to add what the above poster mentioned. I wouldn't waste the money on a masters, remediate low grades instead.

Retake some courses that you got a C in and you shall be fine

Please for the love of god and all that is holy and good in this world do not retake that MCAT. As far as the retake, call AACOMAS and see if they will take the course without the lab. I have an inkling you'll have to do it WITH a lab, but calling and finding out would be best.

Again, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not retake that MCAT. If you retake it you are mental. Do not retake that MCAT.

Thank you all for your kind responses.

I have a question:

Should I take Organic Chemistry at a CC or 4yr University?

I found out that taking at this university with lab is going to cost about $2300, which is beyond my estimate.

I don't know how med schools are gonna view this though.

Do you guys think I have a chance if my GPA is around 3.1 for cGPA and sGPA with 32 MCAT? I really want to go to WesternU, but any med school is fine since I'm trying not to think about Caribbean choice.

Thank you for your input

I don't think med schools are going to care where you take it as long as you do well. I would take it at CC to save money. Retake one or two more courses to bump your gpa 3.2+ and I think you will get a few more interviews from other med schools.

Agree with above. Most DO schools do not care where you take classes. I also believe western heavily weighs the MCAT.

This is what I got from aacomas today morning through phone call.

I asked that I got a C- in organic chemistry C course of 4 units with lecture and lab.

If I were to take organic chemistry c at other university lecture only which is 4 units, would that replace the grade?

what they told me was a bit confusing. It will replace the lecture. Since my home university has 0 unit for lab, accomas has to see how the break down for lab course at my home univerSity. Then they can tell me if it will replace it or not.

Have no clue what to do now Cuz signing up for class needs to be done really soon if I want a spot. What should I do?

I've spoken with AACOMAS a few times about situations similar to yours. They can indeed be very confusing. When you say your university had 0 units for lab, what do you mean? You mean on your transcript it shows up as stating 4 units organic chemistry, without indicating that lab was taken, even though you took lab? If so, that's like my situation. They said I had to have a letter sent from registrar stating that my 4 unit organic chemistry was actually composed of 3 units of lecture and 1 unit of lab. This allowed me to retake a 3 unit lecture course without retaking the lab, although my original 1 unit lab grade would not be replaced.

I'm not sure if that helps or was more confusing.

Hello there,

On my transcript it says
organic chemistry C 4 units C-
Organic chemistry C lab 0 unit
Organic chemistry C discussion 0 unit

My school integrates lab course in the lecture I think as lab reports were included in lecture grade.

So I dont know what I should do. I can afford the lecture fee at other university but its a bit much if lab is included which came out to be 2300 dollars with lab.

Yeah that's a little confusing how your university structured it. Honestly, if I were you, I wouldn't bother retaking it. If the retake was guaranteed to replace your original grade then I would go ahead and do it. Since it seems like there's a very real possibility that AACOMAS wouldn't consider it as a replacement, it's probably just not worth it.

But I got a C- so I have to retake it 🙁 man life sucks hahaha....

Do you recommend me taking Organic chemistry C part at 4 year university without lab that costs ~ $1600, or UNE online Organic chemistry II with lab that costs $1300 ish?

I don't see the problem. Retake the class WITH lab just to be safe. If anything then the new 5 credit Organic Chemistry course will replace your old 4 credit course which will raise your Science GPA even higher.

Can I just take the 4 unit lecture at 4yr university and take 1 unit lab through une online??do you think thats fine???

No. I don't even think UNE would let you do that without taking the full course. If it was multiple courses that you were repeating I would say look into retaking just the lectures but it's one course. Retake the full course with lab at your local CC. It's not worth having the few DO schools that don't honor online pre-reqs screen you out because of 1 pre req you decided to take at UNECOM. Also if you leave the lab, you're only repeating 3 credits and will still have 1 credit left as a C-.

Oh... I see. So although une Web page says lab only costs 315 dollars doesnt mean I can just take lab course. Gotcha..

And I looked at my transcript, lab doesnt have one unit but lecture has 4 units. Retaking just lecture of 4 units at 4 yr university will not change anything I guess?

I heard that its really hard to get organic chemistry 2 spot at cc. But I want to apply next year June for sure. What would you suggest? I really apologize for taking up your time And really appreciate your input.

If I were you I'd look into retaking it over the summer to get it out've the way. Look into retaking it at your original University because sometimes University's will let you retake the class without retaking the lab and just use your old lab grade when calculating the final grade. If your University doesn't do this take it over the summer at a CC or cheap University. Good Luck!

According to my prior dealings with course equivalency issues and AACOMAS, you'll need something from the university's chemistry department officially sent to AACOMAS stating that the courses in question are all equivalent. You can call them and I'm sure they'll tell you the same thing, as long as it follows their other credit equivalency restrictions. They have to be equal or exceed in credit hours as well.

This was not true for me when I applied in 2013.
OP; if the syllabi are similar and the units in your new course are at least equal to those in your old course (which you said they are), then you have a pretty good shot at replacement. This is hard to be certain of without seeing the syllabi/course descriptions though. Retake the lab if you want to be extra safe. I'm not sure whether schools allow you to take only the lecture without lab.

Uci allows students to take just lecture if one passed the course at home university!

I am pretty sure syllabus at uci states almost identicAL to my home university course. I shall look for the syllabus and compare!

I was planning on doing cal poly pomona open university because its a bit cheaper, but I guess I dont have to worry about that just yet.

Thank you!

Good to hear. Remember that UCI is on the quarter system and take that into account when calculating credits.

UNE absolutely allows you to take just the lab, I am enrolled in it right now as a matter of fact.

If you don't mind me asking, did you retake the lecture course? if so, where did you retake it at? and how's UNE laboratory course? will DO schools accept that??

thank you!!

I took retook the lecture at UNE as well, but I did them independently of one another. The lab course is done mostly using a virtual laboratory, you do all the same procedures and steps you would do in a real world lab, with the benefit of beimg able to advance the time by 1 min, 10 min, or 1 hour. I would probably not want it to be my first or only exposure to lab work, but if you're just doing it as a refresher or retake it's a very nice way to do things.

From what I've read on here all of UNE's classes are accepted at most, if not all, DO schools. A few people posted saying they called schools to confirm and the schools much answered with, "Why wouldnt we accept it"

Oh I see... if most schools accept this including a few MDS or perhaps caribbean and st.Georges London accept this, I would love to take this class... the cost is a lot cheaper than at this one 4 yr university 🙁

I feel you on that one... my local 4yr is $880/credit hour vs UNE's $320 (was $315 til last week)
