Hi everyone,

I have searched for in old threads for an answer to this question but have gotten conflicting answers. I graduated this spring with a cgpa of 3.3 and a science gpa of 3.1, and will be taking the MCAT in January 2014 to apply for matriculation to medical school in fall 2015. I would really like to retake some classes and even take some other bio courses to improve my gpa's, but I don't have any more financial aid available (have taken out the max) and frankly, going to the public university to take extra classes is just too expensive for me. Is it looked down upon to take extra classes at a community college for cost reasons instead of at a 4-year institution? Is it even worth it for me to take extra classes at this point? Thanks for any input!

I don't think so at all and I am sure that many adcoms understand that students get caught in this situation. From what I understand, community college courses are okay and even doing a re-take or two is fine at a community college. But to be safe, just contact the schools you want to apply to so you can feel a little more comfortable with taking them there.

If you can fit in some extra bio courses then by all means do it. It can only help you (assuming you do well).

No. Some MD programs don't accept CC courseworl, but it really varies from school to school int he allo world. DO programs are much more forgiving. Remember, more of our students have neen jon-trads, and we recongnize that people have to have a life and can't be professional students

Your sGPA is at the bottom end of acceptable. I suggest applying and seeing how one app cycle goes, but apply broadly. You can work and save some $ in the meantime.

IF you get shut out, re-take any F/C/D science coursework.
