does the application process for residencies (ERAS) run on roughly the same time schedule as AMCAS?WHat is the time frame? I have an upcoming interview with a med student and want to ask him about his residency applications/interviews but I don't want to look dumb and ask that question if it hasn't happened yet.
Rough timetable--ERAS opens in June or July. You can submit September 15th. Interview invites start rolling in as soon as September 15th (my first was 9/16, because 9/15 was a Sunday), and depending on the specialty, interviews start as early as the first week in October.
There are a couple things that throw things off: Military people do away rotations, which count as their interviews, starting in like May through September/October. They submit their rank lists fairly early, and find out where they matched in December. Urology and Ophthalmology are also early matches. I think Plastic Surgery is also considered an early match, but I haven't a clue how that one works.
Everyone else interviews through the end of January. Rank lists open Jan 15th, and close Feb 26th. Match Day is March 21, and we find out the Monday before whether or not we matched. If you didn't match, you enter the SOAP, which starts turning out results on Wednesday of Match Week.
So assuming your med student is a fourth year, he will be either done with interviews, or very close to being done. Third years are still trying to figure out what specialties they want to do.
