I was reading Robbins and in the section on hyperthyroidism it states "in the gastrointestinal system, sympathetic hyperstimulation of the gut results in hypermotility, diarrhea, and malabsorption." It goes on to say that "decreased sympathetic activity results in constipation" when discussing hypothyroidism/myxedema. This seems to be the opposite of what I've seen of SNS effects on gut (e.g. that it inhibits motility). Does anyone have an explanation as to what the mechanism is in this case?
