No residency for GP dentist is required although there are some out there. If you plan on specializing there are residencies and they vary in length. Depends on your specialty. Hope that helps!

For general practitioners, except for NY, there's an optional 1-2 year residency one can do to further their education. NY's the only state so far that requires at least one year of post-grad residency. If you plan to specialize, you have to do a residency ranging from 2-6 years depending on the specialty.

thanks...also during your residency to you get paid? and if so how much...thank you

Varies by the program. If they are university based, there is often a tuition and some amount of stipend. If it is hospital based, it is usually paid- most often in line with what the MD residents make. If you are interested in reading more, look up the academies of each specialty (eg- American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, etc) and you can read about various programs.

In general, some programs requiring a graduate degree ( and thus enrollment in their grad school) actually require you to pay them tuition. This seems to be mainly orthodontics. Other programs pay stipends which are basically the same everywhere....$35,000 to $45,000 starting and going up maybe $1000 each year. Keep in mind that $35G in Memphis, TN is much more than $45G in NYC.

Again, just ask the programs you're interested in because they all vary slightly.
