competitive exclusion principle states that no two species can sustain coexistence if they occupy the same niche.

My question is, two species MAY occupy the same niche but one will drive the other to extinction due to the fact that one may use their resources more efficiently??

So basically wut im trying to ask is can two species occupy the same niche? but not for a long time because one will out-do the other...

Based on what I remember from studying before I took the DAT your reasoning is pretty solid. Based on competitive exclusion, one of the species will out-compete the other one which will lead to the extinction of the weaker species eventually. These are the types of questions on the DAT that are not just retrieval type questions. Most likely you will be given a scenerio and have to pick a logical answer. I doubt they would ask this type of question in a straight-forward manner.

you are 100% correct, it will be given in a scenario type of question that why its important to understand it and not just memorize the definition...

Osims, two species have two coexist for x amount of time before one out competes the other. Say you have two different bacteria (1 and 2) growing in a petri dish with nutrient Z. Bacteria 1 is a better survivor off of nutrient Z, thus it will displace bacteria 2. Depending on how good bacteria 1 is at displacing bacteria 2 is the amount of time they will coexist. I believe that's what you were asking?
