Im not sure of the legality of this, but if i wanted a big dog, not for shows or breeding purposes, could i take my puppy to the vet to get some growth hormone?

Is this a serious question? No....unless you want a dog with terrible orthopedic and endocrine problems as it attains adulthood. Growth hormone is used as a treatment for certain conditions at very low dosages, but that is it.

Troll

You're a medical student??

Nope- if it's not medically indicated, there is no ethical justification for administering growth hormone. Imagine a parent presenting their little boy to you and saying that they want him to be a football player, so will you please give him some growth hormone?

You can talk to breeders of the breed you're interested in- some breed for dogs on the larger end of the scale, some on the smaller.

Still, you give it in kids for a medical reason , they are abnormally small. Unless you have a stunted dog (and even then I would be EXTREMELY cautious) there is no reason to be using it. Growth hormones given even in mild excess can really screw up bone development in a pup, *especially* the large and giant breeds like GSDs, Pyrs, Danes...

It's only used in children if they are significantly below the normal growth curve for their age. They are also closely monitored and must undergo significant testing before they can be put on it.

Yeah but who cares about all that when I just want a big dog. And I mean B I G. Not freakishly big, but enough to compensate for my personal insecurities. And could you make his muscles ripple too? That'd be awesome cuz I'm gonna put a big tattoo on him, and then keep him shaved so everyone can see. And I was thinking about getting him colored lenses too - my dog will have purple eyes, hells yes. All my ****** friends will envy me now.

did someone say rippling muscles?

LoL, is that the myostatin mutation? Or is it GH? i know i've seen the pic around.

I checked out the website, but I nearly had an epileptic seizure due to the color scheme and flashing lights.

Depending on the breed...and possibly sex, growth hormones "may" even lead to osteosarcoma.

Holy crap, i thought that was a photoshop picture!

You know, according to the little tracker on my blog, one of the most common searches that leads people there is "arm up a cow's butt"... I think people overestimate the importance of cow butts in veterinary education!

YUCK! Human nastiness is NOT what we like to hear about :barf:

Our food animal club is discussing making new long-sleeve t-shirts to sell with one sleeve that's all brown and the chest says (with arrow pointing to brown sleeve) "I've had it up to here with palpations!"

that is awesome... I want someone at UT to sell those.

Gah! And people don't understand why we want to do animal medicine instead of working with humans?!
