Question..

Is a C- acceptable for pharmacy school? Some people say it's fine as long as it's not a D or F, others say better retake..I don't know.

A C- in your prerequisites is acceptable for Buffalo, and I'm pretty sure LECOM as well. You need a C (75%) or above in your prerequisites for LIU.
If it's a C- in a course not part of the required prerequisites, than you don't need to retake.

I don't think that's true for LIU. I heard for LIU it's fine as long as it's not a D or F..some people I heard had gotten in w/ a C- in a pre-req class. A boy in one of my classes did..

Well, if that's true I must tell a friend of mine who's waitlisted at LIU. He got a C- in Organic II and thought it was the end. He figured if he was called off the waitlist he would then not be accepted due to this C-.
The best way for him to find the correct information is to ask admissions themselves, because man times word of mouth stories are not accurate. I believe the website does say you must complete the course with a C for it to be transferrable.
Thanks for your info. - I'll relay the assumption.

Haha my friend got a C-also in Orgo II but he got conditional acceptance which brought him down to a 3.5 or something..he just can't get a D or fail last semester in order to keep his acceptance. Maybe your friend's GPA went down b/c of that or something or that the class was already filled up before making a decision for him. I recently called admissions and they said for waitlists to just pass the classes unless it's a D or F and make sure the GPA is above a 3.0 and there's a good chance to get a spot, so I don't think a C- would matter in that case. I may be wrong, not sure..

I had to retake a course for Colorado because I had a C- grade for a pre-req. I don't know the policies for the particular schools you applied to, but I would look into it right away and ask the schools specifically. It would really suck if MCPHS said you're accepted and realized you had an C- in a pre-req and said that had to be redone before they'd consider you, effectively negating your acceptance.

As far as I know, schools tend to do it by class, not by overall GPA (although they may have a minimum for that as well). It's possible that your friend's school had a C- minimum per class. Your school? Call and ask.

If you haven't been accepted yet: DEFINITELY retake.

I've been put on the waitlist for 3 schools but performed horrible my last semester...I received a D+ in Calc 2 and a D in Inorganic Chemistry...I also took 2 remaining pre-reqs(public speaking - A-, Biochemistry- C+) last semester. Even though the two D's I got were for non-prerequisite classes, do you guys this will still affect my admission if I get pulled off the waitlist? I took Calc 1 frosh year and completely forgot everything by the time I took Calc 2. But I don't think it would make sense to retake a non pre-requisite class, right? I would shoot myself if I had to retake it...

That's the same school I applied to..

There is hope!!
I am living proof that a 'C-' won't sink your pharmacy school ship, so to speak. Grades are NOT everything. My grades are so-so, not terrible, but also not stellar. And my PCAT scores overall were less than impressive.

I know my essays are responsible for getting my interview. And my personality won them over!

For reference my 'C-' was from the second quarter of Organic Chemistry. I should mention though, that I did earn an 'A' the 3rd quarter.

Keep your heads up and don't let grades/tests get you down!

Best Wishes Pre-pharmacy members!-- May the force be with you 🙂

On LIU's website The Pharmacy Guidelines Booklet states that "only prerequisite courses with a grades of "C" or higher will be considered for transfer." So...it's possible that a C- is acceptable.
🙂
You may be in luck PharmDkid!
My friend, unfortunately, may not be eligible now - his science GPA dropped below a 3.0 after getting the C- in OrgoII (it was a 5 credit course). Unless,
LIU uses a different formula than PharmCAS in calculating GPA. He has taken two science courses twice, so if they only use the higher grade in calculating GPA then he may be in luck.

Whew! That's a relief. My GPA is a 3.3 overall w/ last semester's grades included. I got a C- in Orgo II, not b/c I didn't study, but b/c my professor was a dick..grades way too harsh and everything has to be perfect according to his standards, w/ not even partial credit given 😡. I also took 21 credits last semester, which is alot and is like a overload, so I was impressed at my results overall. But the other grades are A's and B's..I thought I was done for...but feel better now 🙂. Also, when did your friend take Orgo II? If his grades for the spring semester are good, it go up to 3.0 or higher so he may be safe after all...

I would assume that a C means C, NOT C- or better. After all a C- is not acceptable for classes within your major...it probably isn't for pharmacy school either.

Well I looked up Buffalo and LECOM and they also say "with grades of "C"", which I believe means AT LEAST in the C RANGE, whether or not it's a C+, C- or just C...I know it's not great, but it's OK as long as you don't get too many of them..

I think C means C, not C-. You should email LIU or give them a call.
Yes, they grade by pharmcas.

It all depends on the school. Buffalo accepts a C- and LECOM states they "will accept a grade of C (70%), which at my college a 70% is a C-, not a C".
So, pharmDKid89, you should definitely contact LIU Admissions and ask them directly if the C- you received in Orgo II is acceptable.
