How hard would it be to open up a compounding or independent retail pharmacy? Do you guys think that opening up a pharmacy would worth the money and effort? How long do you guys think it would take someone to open up a practice after the grauduation

I think you might get some good ideas if you post this in the pharmacy forum and not pre-pharm.

You're better off working for big companies like Walgreens, CVS, Riteaids, ... instead of making a hassle running your own store. It's just too competitive for any business to stay alive these days.

Look into an organization called National Community Pharmacists Association. www.ncpanet.org. They are the national organization dedicated to independent pharmacy which is where the majority of compounding is done. As for how soon you can open one, they have programs where you can either buy one off a retiring pharmacist over a period of years or start one from the ground up. It also depends on how much school debt you will have once you're done. With the health care debate still going on, I am hesitant to open one depending on how things go.

I would agree that asking this type of question on this forum is not your best place to look. No offense to anyone, but not many people here have knowledge of what it takes to either open a pharmacy or keep one running on the independent side. I am by far no expert, but I know where to look to find the answers.
