Hey guys! So here's the deal...

I'm taking the DAT on 6/26...I've been studying since about 5/20 and feel very confident about how I will do. After the test is over, I plan on applying to schools right away. BUT, part of me would really like to wait till October, at least to send in all my letters of recommendation. My dentist will be writing one this month (120+ hours shadowing/employment). You see, I've never been super close with most of my professors, and my school doesn't have a pre-dental/med committee. The two professors I am closest to, taught my A&P courses, as well as my Organic Chemistry. I received an A for both semesters A&P, and a B+ for both semesters Ochem.

This upcoming Fall, my Senior year, I will be doing research with my Ochem teacher. I had wanted to wait to ask him about the letter of recommendation till after I had done the research with him for a month or so...

My GPA is not the greatest...3.27 cumulative, 3.48 science. But, if you take out my freshman year, thats a 3.49 cumulative and a 3.66 science.

My main issue is with the letter from the Ochem professor. I did well enough in his course, talked to him enough outside class, and participated in class quite often. I finished 3rd in my class of 25 as far as grades go. But I'm afraid that he, (and my A&P professor) may not know me well enough personally to write a good recommendation, until after I do some research with him. What would you guys do? I want to apply as soon as possible...but not if it hurts me in the long run...Thanks!

I was in a similar situation as you in terms of getting a solid LOR from a science professor. I do agree that getting to know science professors is sometimes difficult, especially at larger universities. I think that you should go ahead and apply right after you finish your DAT. That way, you can be sure to secure some pre-December interviews. I wouldn't wait for the LOR until October.

In terms of the OChem prof knowing you personally, I think you should maybe sit down with him during his office hours or outside of class and actually spend about ~15 minutes talking to him about your career plans and how motivated you are to get into dental school. This is what I did with my OChem professor as well (we had a lecture class of 450 students) and he wrote me a very nice, personalized LOR. While researching with your professor would definitely build a nice personal relationship, I don't think you have the time to wait until October to complete your application. It's best to submit it as early as possible. You can still get a very personal LOR from one or two sit-downs with your professor.
