Hi all,

Apologies if this question has already been asked and answered. I had a question regarding AP Credit. Coming in to college, the only AP Credit I used for a science course was for AP Chemistry. This gives me credit for Gen Chem I, Gen Chem I Lab, and Gen Chem 2 (Analytical Chem). The only other class I am required to take is Analytical Chemistry Lab. I have taken Organic Chemistry I and II with both labs and scored an 'A' in all of those classes.

However, I recently heard that many medical schools do not like if you use AP credit for science per-requisites, and to my luck *especially* for Chemistry. Currently, I am a rising junior and do not really have time to go back to Gen Chem I (and I think it would look weird if I took it after Orgo anyway). Another option is to just take Gen Chem II (Analytical) lecture as well as the lab -- would this be enough?

I looked at my state school's website (and also top choice medical school) and it states that AP credits are accepted to meet pre-requisites but it is "strongly recommended" that we take "some of your biology and chemistry courses while in college". Any thoughts?

Please let me know what you think!

Take Gen Chem II lecture and lab and make sure that your AP credit appears on your transcript, and you should be fine.

If you enjoy chemistry, take pchem. Problem solved. Do not take general chemistry which will void your AP credit. Keep moving forward.

Taking Gen Chem II would void the AP credit? That has to be a school-specific policy.

Pchem works too but it's a nasty course if you don't actively like chem. If there's no issue with his school in terms of getting credit for Gen Chem 1 through AP and taking Gen Chem II that's definitely easier.

Does it matter if I take Gen Chem II + lab after submitting my application?

It's ok to have some prereqs still to be completed when you apply (I'm a nontrad applying this cycle and have one basic science left for the fall) but you need to have a strong physical science MCAT score and/or upper level coursework to clearly show that completing the course is essentially a formality.

This exactly. 👍👍👍

See below. Pchem is more like physics than chemistry, but OP needs to be pretty strong in math and critical thinking to do well.

If you want to take gen chem II, by all means do it. I don't recommend it, because you already have a strong knowledge on chemistry based on your performance in orgo. I'd move on and take upper level chem courses. That has a stronger weight.
