I'm a fmg and interested in radiology. Keeping that in mind i am far from a lock in matching into rads.

I was told to try this approach when applying while also applying for a 2nd residency. But I have a few questions now about it would work.

I was told to apply for rads in 07, a prelim spot in 07 and rads in 08. As well as applying to lets say anesthesiology (which I'm not sure if I would be required todo a prelim year as well or if it would be a categ match).

so what happens if I say I get selected for rads 07 and a prelim spot 07. Would that be possible, if it was, what would be the rules regarding that?

I don't really understand what you would be doing. You have to do a prelim year and you apply for rads for the following year. Don't get how you would be matching into a rads and prelim spot starting in the same year. If so, that would be a problem though because the contract is binding, which means you have to go to the program once you have matched. Couldn't do two at once or drop one by choice. (if that's what you're asking). Perhaps clarify your question a bit? Gas does require a prelim year, btw.

My gas requires a whole room. 😳

Ah. Guess I should be more specific next time. 🙂

OP: Replace "gas" with "anesthesiology" in my above post. Well, my FIRST post. Gotta remember to be specific.

Sorry, wrote the post in a hurry this morning.

Part of this I guess is related to my lack of knowledge concerning the match.

I was told by another student to try this.
Apply for rads in 07 as pgy1, apply for a prelim spot in 07 and apply for a rads pgy2.
At the same time, I was told because of my position as a fmg, applying to a 2nd residency would be wise.
So I would have to be applying to for example, anesthesiology pgy2 spots in 08?

Know I believe there are 2 matches that go on. 1 for the main residency, i.e. rads and 1 for prelim spots?
I am not sure of this though, so its prob why I'm not making sense.

Now, for instance, lets say I match for rads 07 and a prelim spot 07. Would that be possible? and if so, to which program would I be contractly bound to?

I hope this explains it.

The problem with this plan is that you don't start radiology as a PGY1, it's an advanced position. Both Radiology and Anesthesiology start after a prelim or transitional year. So what you could do is list all your radiology programs first and then anesthesiology second so that if you don't match in rads you might match in (pardon me but I'm too lazy for this) "gas". But either one would not start until 2008 and you'd have to complete your prelim/transitional year first. Make sense? Rads, gas and prelim/transitional spots are handled through the NRMP (regular match) so this would all go down in March. May want to look into the competitiveness of anesthesia after this year's match, because the rumor is that it's increasing (but you never know). Probably won't rival radiology any time soon though.

Hope that all makes sense.
