Im a going to dental school next year and my school offers a dual degree option of DMD/DO. I am considering doing it because i am interested in medicine as well as dentistry.

I've been hearing that DOs are mostly confined to working in rural areas, how true is this? what are there limitations to what a DO can do clinically?
Also, are DOs able to work as primary care physicians right out of school without a residency?

Any information would be appreciated. thanks.

100% false

DOs are fully licensed physicians just like MDs. There is no difference in clinical options.

No physician can do this. State laws require 1-3 years of residency to even get an independent license. Practicing without completing a residency (minimum of 3 years) is becoming much less commonplace anywhere.

Moving to pre-osteo since this is a pre-med question.

Dr. Mom pretty much has it covered, but I'll just go into it a little bit more.

I'd suggest that if you have the time, to read the "DOs in America" book by Norman Gevitz. Not sure if that's the actual title but you'll figure it out, I'm sure. Wikipedia and the AACOMAS website can give you some summaries as well.

DMD/DO would allow you to do an oral/maxillofacial surgery residency, which would be pretty cool. DrMom hit the nail on the head with regard to your questions.

If you have a shot for the combined program, go for it.
