1. So, I want to submit the primary app June 1st. How can I see the essay question(s) ahead of time or will I not see it till June 1st.

2. DAT scores submission? I heard some schools toss your scores till they have your primary app so I would submit them June 1st?

3. When do secondaries come at the earliest? Are they online of paper-format? (Do letters of rec fit in with secondaries?)

I am asking this because I want to travel during June/July?

Please do tell if any school sends out secondaries BEFORE August 1st. I know I will apply to UC's and Pacific. Maybe UW, Mich, Columb, Penn...

1) Check around at a bunch of websites online, or, whatever, I'm feeling especially helpful tonight, here are the most important ones!

Personal Statement Prompt:

Your Personal Statement should address why you desire to pursue a dental education and how a dental degree contributes to your personal and professional goals. You are encouraged to compose your statement in a text-only word processor (e.g., Notepad), review your statement for errors, then cut and paste the final version into the text box above. Click the Save button and return to the Personal Statement to review the formatting of your text. You are limited to approximately 1 page (4500 characters, including spaces).
Some formatting characters used in programs like Word (angled quotes, accents, special characters) will not display properly. Carefully review your final text and to make the necessary corrections to the format.

Manual Dexterity Question:

Describe any activities requiring manual dexterity (e.g. activities requiring hand-eye coordination such as cross-stitching, sewing, art, crafts, playing musical instruments, auto repair, etc.) at which you are proficient.

Other Info Questions:

List any supplemental academic enrichment programs and/or post-baccalaureate programs in which you have participated to enhance your preparation for dental school.
You may list programs experienced in high school and/or college that may include (but are not limited to): summer academic enrichment programs targeted to disadvantaged students; DAT preparation courses offered by an academic institution or commercial entity, and post-baccalaureate programs.Provide the name of the program, a brief description, and total hours of participation, and dates of experience(s).

Has your education ever been interrupted or affected adversely for reasons other than deficiencies in conduct or academic performance? If Yes, Please Describe.

That's about it for anything you'd need to write. The Personal statement is limited to 4500 characters, INCLUDING spaces, and all of the other questions are limited to 600 Characters. There's also the sections on Awards, Research, Shadowing, Work Experience, but there's not really anything to write for those other than exactly what they are. Oh, they do ask what your duties were at work / research / etc.

2) Yes, don't send them in until after June 1st, I'd give it a few weeks since they won't get your app for almost a month after you fill it out if you apply that early.

3) Most of the schools that have secondaries say on the AADSAS website "Go to our homepage admissions section and fill out the secondary and mail it in with your check as soon as you submit your AADSAS application online." Many don't even have a secondary, ie, Pittsburgh, Columbia, Howard, USC, and you just send them a check as soon as you submit your AADSAS online. Others, such as UCLA and Midwestern will send you the secondary once they receive your application. For UCLA, be prepared to send them a copy of every transcript you've ever had, and your high school transcripts.

A few of the secondaries are all online and you can submit your secondary payment by credit card, like Midwestern. Others are PDF's that you can write in, like UNLV, and then others are more frustratingly word documents that weren't really formatted correctly to add anything to without messing up all of the lines, ie Creighton and UCLA.

Like I said, most of the secondaries are "Submit them when you submit your AADSAS application" and then many schools just want a check. From your list (and my memory), Penn and UCLA had a few short essays to write, and I know that Columbia and UoP didn't have one, and I don't think Mich had one.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for well-explained and detailed answer. Greatly appreciated.
If anyone else has anything else to add (I don't think much is left to say though), please do.

you can see it on May 15th. As long as your PS is ready, 15 days are more than enough time to prepare other parts of the application and proof read them.
Open your account on May 15th and print out your transcript matching and LOR matching forms. Send your transcript and LOR to AADSAS even if you havent submitted your application.

So, I was told this year that the application opens on June 1st rather than May 15th.
Assuming I have already written my Personal Statement. How long do you think it would take to send my LOR/transcripts with their appropriate forms?
I need to buy a ticket now...

Could I send my LORs to a letter service and then have them send my LORs with the form to AADSAS?

Yes, this year they pushed it back to June 1st instead of May 15th.

As far as the letter service, I'd check with the schools, because I had heard that some of the schools won't take it from letter services that aren't done by your undergrad school.

To print out the Matching forms only takes a second, then you just bring them down to your registrar or whatever and send them in. The thing that takes a long time is AADSAS processing the transcripts, and when they're most busy (right at the beginning), it can take up to a month - and you can't "submit" your AADSAS application until they've processed your transcripts.

The LOR's are another story entirely, you don't have to have the LOR's in when you submit your application, they will catch up with your application along the way, as long as they get to the schools before the schools start looking at them in Mid/Late August. So putting extra effort forward to make sure the letters get there early isn't necessary.

So when should I send in the DAT scores.... if I plan to began applying right away?
What should I tell my LOR writers if I plan to use the internet portal? Should I just tell them now that I would like them to have the letters ready by a certain time? Then we I sign in to AADSAS give them the password.
Should I wait until my application is completed before sending the LORs and DAT scores (or time it and have them sent so I get done with the app and they all arrive around the same time)?
Also how many batches are there in a typical cycle?

So trying to apply early just seems pointless because of the wait for the transcript to get to AADSAS and waiting for its verification. You could have the transcript sent and then just wait a couple weeks before you have to start to fill out the rest of the application. Right???? (even though I know it would be best to finish things as fast as possible)

BTW, not trying to hijack the thread but I figure my questions might answer some of yours as well as mine.

I'd say to request to have your DAT scores sent in the same day you submit your AADSAS, as they'll both take about the same time to get to the schools (3 weeks or so). Also, remember that your DAT scores never go to AADSAS, they go straight to the schools. The letters you just do what I'll say below and then it's out of your hands from there, but you can submit your AADSAS before the letters come in, and the letters will catch up with the application.

Tell your letter writers to write your letter and save it as a word document, and then once June 1st rolls around they'll get an email that will give them instructions on making their own little mini account and then they'll be able to see who the student was that requested that the email be sent to them, and instructions for and uploading the letter to your application file. I asked one of my writers how it worked and they said it was all very easy.

And you're thinking about it a bit backwards - the reason it takes a while is because so many people are putting their applications in at the same time, if you wait three weeks or so, then there will be three weeks of people who's applications got in before yours did. Applications are processed in the order that they were submitted. For some reason, it takes like an additional 3 weeks after you hit submit and for the application to actually be sent out to the schools - I don't think it has anything to do with transcript verification, as the transcripts need to be verified before you can even hit submit. And yes, there is a very large "SUBMIT APPLICATION" button on the application page.

Alright so I think I got it.... AADSAS opens on June 1st and people can start to open accounts, get the forms, and start filling out questions. Then I submit the AADSAS app and they will later verify the transcript and send my to the schools (where the DAT scores and LORs will catch up). Right???

So there are my plans (maybe it will clear up my thoughts):
1) In a few weeks ask for LORs and have writers hold on till june 1st
2) on june 1st- print off transcript matching form and go to school. have them get an official transcript and attach the form and to send it.
3) june 1st- put in LOR writers info so they get their directions for submitting LORs
4) june 1st through a few days or so- fill out all of the app info, pay the bill, and submit
5) june 1st- call schools and check if got my DAT scores...if not have them sent
6) once done with AADSAS questions, start supp apps.
7) AADSAS verifies the transcript and I....
8) constantly check to see if AADSAS and my schools get everything (money, app, DAT scores, LORs, supp apps....)

Please feel free to just quote me and correct any errors within my writing....
Oh..... and I owe you big time.

Yes you can submit your application on June 1st, Aadsas will just not mail it out until it verifies your transcripts which usually take about 3 weeks. Submit on June 1. They will update your application accordingly when the information comes in.

also I would make sure that your peofessors submit your LOR via email, that way is the fastest and there is the lowest chance of complication. Your aadsas will be updated immediately when the email is sent.

Yeah...my original thinking was that I cannt submit the app until AADSAS verifies the transcript. But now I see... Thanks klutzy and vicviper.

Yeah I heard that this was the best way of doing it... since AADSAS is known to lose some things.

But this would mean you have to depend on your professors to actually upload the LOR ON June 1st rather than putting it off for a few weeks or so.

so is there a difference between "SUBMIT APPLICATION" and "E-Submit"??
Because how can AADSAS verify your transcripts until they get the money from you? And as far as I know, you have to "E-submit" so you can pay you money.
Also, do you get to look at the AADSAS-verified GPA after they verify it or do you send in your transcripts, pay yor fees and then they verify it and send it in? Any help is great!!

Where did you get that "Submit application" ? As far as I know, there is only an E-submit button in AADSAS.

The application is not e-submitted until you pay the fee and you do that after you click "e-submit" button (a couple more windows popup after you click e-submit where you specify payment info and only after that the app is e-submitted completely)

I guess as soon as they verify GPA, they will post it in your status. You can check it there. I am not sure what the timeline is between verifying the GPA and sending the app out (if everything else is ready to go, of course)
