A lot of people are saying asians are not minorities anymore. In a way this is true for eastern asians such as chinese, koreans, japanese, maybe vietnamese now. I know that cambodians, laos, and hmongs are underserved minorities. Will dental school know the different? I am cambodian and most cambodians came during the early 80's to escape genocide and all the educated were murdered. Please let me know what you think about dental schools considering me a minority even though I am technically asian, but southeast. Thanks

I really don't know the answer but doesn't the "race box" only give you the option of Asian? I wouldn't count on admissions people being able to tell your ethnicity based upon your name.

Asians might be minorities but I think dental schools look at under represented minorities for admissions purposes. That is to say, if the profession as a whole historically lacks asians then asians would be considered under represented. This means different things at different schools but the idea is that schools will attempt to close the gap of "under" represented.

Work hard, do whatever you can to put yourself in a competitive position for dental school admission. Regardless of your race, this method is the best way to get into dental school.

It's true that the admissions committee are ignorant when it comes to knowing that Cambodians and Laotians/Hmongs are under-represented minorities when it comes to East Asians.

Some of those hick adcoms have that "all look the same" mentality.

But good luck, and be pro-active when you write up your application.
Let them know your experience of growing up in a Cambodian or Hmong enclave, and if you've immigrated to the US, write that experience in your personal statement.

If you're minority asian you are truly screwed. Schools just want black, hispanic, and american indian minorities so they can put it on their brochures. :-/

Most schools will usually ask questions in their secondary about overcoming hardships, something that makes you different from other candidates, etc. If they don't have that question, you can always include it in your personal statement as well. I think if you and your family had escaped genocide, that should qualify as a relatively difficult time in your life. However, if that's not the case, you can't rely on other people's experiences, who happen to come from the same country as your family, to get you into dental school.

Lets make this clear, If you are asian and applying to any health profession then you are NOT considered a minority. Asians are well represented in health fields. In fact it might be harder for you to get in since you will be competing with other asians (for whom their stats are for the most part above the average.) So best advice is work your butt off, do the best you can, never give up and beat those crazy asians and their stats lol goodluck!

lack of differentiation for different asian countries is no different than what goes on for the hispanics. Mexicans are not Salvadorians are not Colombians are not Peruvians, etc., yet they are all lumped under the Hispanic race.

not trying to tell you to stuff it or anything, just that the problem you bring up is not limited to asians.
