Hi Everyone,
I have recently been accepted to MSUCOM and I am very excited about attending but i have a few concerns. If anyone who is a current student or is also interested in attending the school can give me some advice or answer these questions I would truely appreciate it.
1. During first year, the allopathic and osteopathic students take the basic science classes together. Initially I thought this was a good thing because it means that they must have established a really strong program to be able to do so, but wouldnt it get too crowded??? I went to a small undergrad and I am more used to small classes. Does it become difficult to get your questions answered in class or contacting the professor afterwards?
2. Do we have to pay for tuition for the summer as an extra semester?
3. There is no medical library...but is there a main library where we can at least get books on reserve that we do not want to buy?
4. I am a non-michigan resident, how likely am i to get the non-resident scholarship? I hear almost every out of state student gets the $15,000 scholarship, is that true?
5. Is it true that 3rd and 4th year rotations are allll held in one hospital....what if i want to do a rotation in another state?
6. How difficult is it to get off campus housing?
OK thats about it....If anyone could give me some advice, I would truely appreciate it.
Thanks

1. yes class is crowded the first day, then a fari # of people stop coming and there is no problem. you are no longer at a small school, you are at a big ten university. its a very different mindset from lib arts schools, trust me, i went to one. ask questions in class sometimes, but make them pertinent. most professors are extremely receptive to email, i found that the best method.
2.summer tuition is figured into your financial aid, and since you take about 12 credits, no it is not free
3.there is almost no need for a medical library. but inside fee hall there is the kobiljak center which has a number of texts on reserve that you can utilize there. not once in my two years at MSU have i ever needed a medical library, and neither have many of my classmates, for the most part. there is so much course information there is no time to study texts, except for some classes where you need to simply talk to the second years and figure out what they used.
4.yes there are scholarships; no its not guaranteed. you need to work hard to earn that scholarship, be sure you do well in your classes, and you shouldn't have any problems.
5.no, you have a base hospital in years 3&4 that serves just as that, your base. you do you core rotations at that hospital, and then your class should have about 6 out rotations (mine has only four), which means you can travel to ireland if you set it up ahead of time.
6.i have no idea about living on campuis, and know few who do. MSU is huge, there are no problems finding a place to live. again, talk to other people in the class and people a year or two ahead of you to get info, and search this site for info.
