To anyone who currently or has attended NECO, is it crucial to take Biochem and the second semester of orgo? I know NECO says that Biochem is recommended, and that a second semester of Orgo is not required. This seems too good to be true? What are people's thoughts/advice on this. Also, I am a current Biology major, but I am pretty sure I am switching to Psych with a minor in Bio, will I still be competitive? 🙂

Most of the optometry schools do not require the second organic. And if biochem is recommended but not required that obviously means you dont NEED to take it. Also, I am doing a double major in Bio and Psych...and they say they take degrees of all types so as long as you have the pre-reqs i doubt it matters what else you do.

I understand that I don't NEED to take it.

I was wondering from any students enrolled at NECO if taking Biochemistry as an undergrad would be the best option. If someone didn't take Biochem as an undergrad did they wish they did? Or, if someone did take Biochem as an undergrad did it truly give them an advantage?

I'm currently a neco student and overall I would say that taking an undergraduate biochemistry course, even an intro one would be beneficial for your understanding of the basic sciences in general. The better base you have to build on the more you can expand on it later in the future. As for giving you a clear advantage, I'm not sure if it would in particular since most students will dedicate more time to a subject area they may feel they are weak in and so it evens out. So you probably won't be disadvantaged grades wise in the course work but if you had already taken some biochem previously it would more be a review of the concepts for you and allow you apply it in a different perspective more readily.
